Gray C’52 Gr’65 was granted an honorary OBE (Officer of the British Empire) in the New Year Honours List; the investiture took place in February at the ambassador’s residence in Washington. This was for his “pioneering contributions to the establishment and expansion of integrated study-abroad opportunities for American undergraduates in the U.K.” Former president, co-founder, and current chair of the Institute for Study Abroad, he helped establish the Arcadia University Center for Education Abroad.

Myers W’54, the Emeritus Chair and Distinguished Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh, was presented last June with the Grand Gold Medal of the Comenius University in Bratislava, for “achievements in head and neck cancer and for his personal contributions in developing Slovakian otolaryngology.”

’60 | Bert Lazerow C’60, professor of law at the University of San Diego and director of its Institute on International and Comparative Law, is spending this year academic at Boalt Hall, the law school of the University of California Berkeley. In the fall he was a visiting professor, teaching Income Tax and International Contracts; this spring, he remains there on sabbatical leave. He will direct San Diego’s summer-law programs in Florence in June and in Paris in July.

’62 | Hon. Lita Indzel Cohen CW’62 L’65 and her husband, Stanley S. Cohen, live in Lower Merion, Pa., and have two married children and two grandchildren. In February she was unanimously appointed chairperson of its vacancy board. She has represented the 148th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania General Assembly since 1992.
’64 | Bruce Gimelson C’64, www.brucegimelson.com, writes, “Having been interested in collecting since buying my first autograph in 1947 (when only five and a half!) at Sessler’s Book Shop on Walnut Street, I was destined to continue this activity professionally, which I did after graduation. In 1965, I acquired my first major collection: the Dunninger Archive of Houdini Magic Illusions, Handcuffs, Manuscripts, and Posters. It was sold, after immense publicity on The Today Show and a long article in the Times, to a collector in Niagara Falls, Ontario, who featured it in a museum, The Houdini Magic Hall of Fame. Our next major acquisition was the Abbe Vignali Collection of Napoleonic Relics, which included most of the possessions of L’Empereur when he died on St. Helena in 1821. We sold this monumental archive at auction in Paris, spring 1977. In 1973 the Library of Congress recommended me to the Washington law firm of Covington & Burling to appraise the papers of their most famous partner, Dean Acheson, President Harry Truman’s secretary of state. There were nearly 200 letters of Truman, many with extraordinary content. Over the next 15 years I made two major purchases from the Union League Club of Philadelphia, handled hundreds of letters of Washington (including his 1794 ‘Whiskey Rebellion’ speech, which defined the law and order clause of the Constitution), Jefferson, Adams, and Lincoln among many others. In the early 1990s I secured for a client the most important piece of American sculpture: Jean Antoine Houdon’s 1786 bust of Thomas Jefferson. It has lately been donated to Monticello. In between these historical acquisitions, I also have had time to father three children, who in turn have given me three grandchildren. My wife, Sandra, and I live in Garrison, N.Y.”
Susan O. Jaffe CW’64 has been appointed chair of the new Philadelphia zoning board. During his campaign last year, Mayor Michael Nutter W’79 promised to overhaul the city’s zoning and planning. She had previously served on the board for some 12 years, including as vice chair, mostly in the administrations of W. Wilson Goode WG’69 Hon’84 and Hon. Ed Rendell C’65 Hon’00.
Bill Runner WEv’64 WEv’66 writes that he was honored to represent Penn in February at the inauguration of Thomas P. Leary as the seventh president of Luzerne County Community College. Bill is president of the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Club of Northeastern Pennsylvania, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year www.nepenn.com/alumni. Dr. Barry Krisberg C’67 G’68 Gr’71, a lecturer at UC Berkeley School of Law and president of the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, was selected by the North American Resource Center for Child Welfare to receive this year’s Pro Humanitate Literary Award. His article, “Hate the Player and Hate the Game: The Politics of the War Against the Young,” which was “honored for exemplifying the intellectual integrity and moral courage required to transcend political and social barriers to promote best practice in the field of child welfare,” will be included in the forthcoming collection, “Beyond the War Against Crime” (NYU Press).

Biswanger Jr. Slide Collection of Literary Landscapes for its permanent collection. “It consists of more than 30,000 Kodachrome transparency slides of the homes, haunts, and literary landscapes of famous authors.” His father, Dr. Raymond A. Biswanger Jr. C’44 GEd’48 G’50 Gr’51, a teacher of English literature for over 30 years, died in 2006.
Hal Colston EE’75 in February was profiled in the “Heroes Among Us” section of People magazine. A “social entrepreneur” in Vermont, he founded two anti-poverty programs: Good News Garage in 1996, which repairs donated cars and provides them to poor people in New England (www.goodnewsgarage.org); and NeighborKeepers in 2004, which which works to build committed support communities to help families move out of poverty www.neighborkeepers.org).

’76 | Michael P. Malloy L’76 last year celebrated his 25th year as a law professor: he is a Distinguished Professor and Scholar at the University of the Pacific law school in Sacramento. He co-wrote Global Issues in Contract Law (Thomson-West, 2007); and in December he delivered a two-hour lecture on “The History and Current Structure of U.S. Financial Services Regulation: Watters under the Bridge” at the Charterhouse Square campus of Queen Mary University of London. His hornbook Principles of Bank Regulation (2003) is now available in a digital version from Thomson-West.
Mary Theresa Metzler C’76 is a partner in the labor, employment, and immigration group and the healthcare group of the Philadelphia law firm of Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP. ’80 | Leslie Esdaile Banks W’80 received the 2008 Storyteller of the Year Award from Essence magazine. She has written over 30 novels and 10 novellas in various genres, notably a 12-book Vampire Huntress Legends series published by St. Martin’s Press. Andy Lapat C’86 wrote in late February that he and his wife, Allison Silverman Lapat C’91, along with Claire (eight) and Nathan (six) had just returned from their annual week long outing to Alta, Utah. “The snow this year was exceptional as these were the best conditions we have ever had.
