36 Leon Forman C’36 L’39, a senior counsel in the Philadelphia-based law firm of Blank Rome LLP in October received the 2004 Excellence in Education Award from the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. He is one of only two practitioners to receive this award in the last fifteen years, as it is usually reserved for bankruptcy judges.

47 Dr. Anthony F. C. Wallace C’47 G’49 Gr’50, emeritus professor of anthropology at the University, wrote Revitalizations and Mazeways: Essays on Culture Change, Volume 1, which was recently published by the University of Nebraska Press. He also wrote The Social Context of Innovation: Bureaucrats, Families, and Heroes in the Early Industrial Revolution, as Foreseen in Bacon’s New Atlantis (2003).
49 Dr. Frank C. Greiss Jr. C’49 M’53 GM’57, emeritus professor and retired chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Wake Forest University, last April received the 2004 distinguished-service award from the North Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecological Society. He has been instrumental in improvements to women’s health care both in North Carolina and throughout the country; his research on uterine blood flow is still quoted today, 40 years after he published on it in his first paper. He lives in Mooresville with his wife, Barbara.
Dr. Jerome Liebman C’49 writes, “After graduating, I went to Harvard Dental and Medical schools. Graduating from there in 1955, I went to Case Western Reserve University to train in pediatrics. I returned to Boston Children’s Hospital to train in pediatric cardiology, and in 1960 returned to Cleveland to establish the pediatric-cardiology division at the Children’s Hospital there; I was director of the division for 22 years, then became an adjunct professor in biomedical engineering. In addition to continued clinical work and teaching in pediatric cardiology, I did research in electrocardiographic body-surface mapping. I received excellence-in-teaching awards from [Case Western Reserve], and then five years ago, the pediatric-cardiology section of the Academy of Pediatrics honored me with its Founders Award. I returned to Penn when my daughter (fourth child) Amy Ruth Waychoff C’84 graduated.”

50 Richard E. Hoffman W’50 writes, “To celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary and my wife, Nancy’s 65th birthday, we and all our children and four grandchildren went on a cruise to the Bahamas. The weather was perfect, as were the waters, and a great time was had by all. There was much to do, and just being all together made it perfect.”
51 Floyd L. Cranmer Jr. Ar’51, a retired architect, announces that he is “the proud possessor of a new fangled titanium hip-joint. The successful surgery was performed in June by Dr. James J. Purtill C’86. Home health-care visits were performed by another Penn graduate, Tina Nelson NTS’77.”
Dr. G. Edward Janosik Gr’51 writes that he served as an alternate delegate for Missouri at last year’s Democratic National Convention. He noted, “I could apply to the Guinness Book of Records as the only American to ever have officially represented three different states—Pennsylvania, New York, and Missouri—at the Democratic National Conventions.”
52 Bernard E. Bernstein W’52 and his wife, Barbara W. Bernstein, received the James L. Clayton Award from the Knoxville (Tenn.) Museum of Art, which is given to those “whose support of the museum has been both uncommonly generous and sustained.” It was announced that the honorary title of the museum’s curator will be “the Barbara W. and Bernard E. Bernstein Curator of Collections and Exhibitions.”
Bernard E. Bernstein W’52, a partner in the Knoxville, Tenn., law firm of Bernstein, Stair & McAdams, is a founding director and was the first chair of the University of Tennessee Medical Center. He also joined the board of Saks, Inc., in 1987 and retired last June, when the company made a $50,000 gift to the center, in honor of Bernard and his wife, to establish an employee-education assistance fund.
Donald P. Scanlon W’52 was quoted in the summer issue of Footnotes—The Winged Foot Golf Club, about his playing in the U.S. Amateur event in 1961 at Pebble Beach against, amongst others, “‘a 21-year-old kid from Ohio, Jack Nicklaus. … It was a memorable occasion, to be in such an event at such a place.’ But Don has had his days, too, having won the club championship at Pine Valley Golf Club, two Westchester father-and-son victories, the Irving S. Cobb Memorial at Paducah, Ky., and three Hot Springs Invitationals.”
Dr. Jeanne Levy Smith G’52 has been honored by her former students at the Pennsylvania State University with the establishment of an endowment that will provide an annual award, the Dr. Jeanne Smith Psychological and Social Service Award at Penn State Abington. It will “honor and recognize outstanding achievement by undergraduate students in appropriate majors at the Abington College who have achieved superior academic records, who manifest promise of continued academic distinction, and who contribute to the welfare of the college and/or community.” She taught experimental psychology at Penn State Abington (then, Penn State Ogontz) from 1957 until she retired in 1981 as professor emerita. During her tenure she received separate awards from students, faculty, and staff for excellence in teaching and for promoting the welfare of the campus community. She had previously taught and conducted research at Penn and at Bryn Mawr College. She and her husband, Albert P. Smith WEv’45, a member of the engineering Faculty at the old Abington College, moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1982. Albert died Feb. 2003.
54 Leon Henry W’54 is CEO and chair of Leon Henry Inc., an alternative print-media management and brokerage firm in Hartsdale, N.Y. He writes, “I have just concluded my 48th year in business. My wife, Thelma, three daughters, and a son-in-law are part of our staff of 35 persons.”

55 Dr. Paul Bernstein Gr’55 recently published Letters to Eleanor: Voices of the Great Depression (Authorhouse, 2004). Focusing on why so many wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt—mostly women, seeking both counsel and material help—during the dismal days of the Thirties, it offers a new interpretation of her life and work. His last book was American Work Values (SUNY Press, 1997).
James M. Handler W’55 writes, “My wife, Davida, and I moved to Henderson, Nev., in 2002 after living a lifetime In Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I had retired, but Davida found that I was spending too much time at home, so I started working in the real-estate market in the fastest growing population area in the United States. I changed fall 2003 to a business brokerage, Nevada First Business Brokerage, and am thoroughly enjoying listing and selling business in this area. One of our three sons is Dan Handler C’83.”
Dr. Budd Rubin D’55 is a practicing orthodontist in San Diego. When he had maintained a practice in Los Angeles he worked on a number of celebrities, including Cher, Phyllis Diller, Michael Jackson, and Diana Ross. Last June he ran the Suzuki Rock’n’ Roll Marathon, which he helped establish seven years ago. This was his 16th marathon. His first was 24 years ago, when he was 50; finishing in 4 hrs. 5 min., he had said, “Okay, I did it. Once is enough.” He ran his second at 57, after the tragic death of a staff member in his practice. Then he ran to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; he was inspired to this as he had volunteered at City of Hope, a comprehensive cancer center in Los Angeles, practicing dentistry for young people there. On average, Budd runs about 18 miles a week. Quoted in The San Diego Union-Tribune on the key to maintaining good health late in life, he said, “I know it may sound corny, but I think it’s a mind, body, and spirit thing. My mind is with my practice. And my spirit is just setting a goal that’s bigger than I am.”
Ann Brosnahan Thompson CW’55 <[email protected]> has begun her eighth term and 22nd year as a selectman in Medfield, Mass., where she has lived for 40 years with her husband, Andy Thompson C’55. They have six children—Barbara Thompson Duperreault C’78 among them—and 13 grandchildren. Ann still sells real estate at Re/Max and hopes to keep on working forever.
56 Paul Corliss W’56 is a retired entrepreneur who had pioneered supermarket check-cashing cards and capturing shoppers’ demographics through supermarket cards. In recent years he has set up the Silver Fox Club, which takes the theme that silver hair is a sign of achievements in one’s life rather than a sign of aging. It is now “a virtual outlet for leading-edge Boomers, and others 48 and beyond, who are still setting the rules with the same rebellious spirit and sense of humor that have always defined them (www.thesilverfoxclub.com).”
58 Gerald Gornish C’58 writes, “In early 2003 I retired from the law firm of Wolf, Block, Schorr & Solis-Cohen LLP in Philadelphia and was appointed chief counsel of the Pennsylvania Public School Employees’ Retirement System. Since that time, I have grown accustomed to the daily train commute to Harrisburg, and am taking full advantage of modem technology to respond to e-mails and telephone calls on the train, in addition to revising documents and reading. I have still found time to train for one or two marathons a year, and to travel with my wife to visit my two children and five grandchildren, who live 10 time-zones apart, in California and Israel.”

60 Eleanor Civatella GEd’60, Morton, Pa., a retired reading specialist, was the featured speaker at a luncheon lecture at Rosemont College to mark the 10th anniversary of the Forum (a continuing-education program for people 55 and older). She spoke on “The Hermitage Museum” in St. Petersburg, Russia.
H. Laddie Montague Jr. C’60 is managing principal and a shareholder of the Philadelphia law firm of Berger & Montague, P.C., and chair of its antitrust department. In October he was elected chair of the board of governors of the Dickinson School of Law at Pennsylvania State University. Among his career achievements, he was plaintiff co-trial counsel in the mandatory punitive-damage class action in the Exxon Valdez litigation.
62 Lita Indzel Cohen CW’62 L’65 has retired after serving 10 years as a Pennsylvania State Representative for Montgomery County. She is now a trustee of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, a director of Susquehanna Patriot Bank, and a founding member of the board of the City Avenue Special Services District, the Aware Foundation, a commissioner of the Pennsylvania Public Television Network, and a member of the community-reevaluation committee for the United Way of Southeast Pennsylvania.
Bob Freidus W’62 e-mails, “It’s an odd feeling after being a photography and sculpture dealer in SoHo for many years to wind up as the photographer on a major art-book project: I have been working with a group of people on Italian Memorial Sculpture: 1820-1940 for over eight years and the book is finally out. It sounds dry as dust but some of the sculptures are sexy, even erotic; there’s also an article on figurative Jewish tombs in Italy, plus one on the dispersion of angel imagery throughout the world. At the moment I’m working on getting publicity and reviews for the book, which was launched in October here in London. This is the first book in English on the subject, and the initial responses have been very enthusiastic. Music to my ears!! In addition, it appears that I’m going to have a joint show of this work at FSU in Tallahassee, along with Robert Fichter, the other photographer, in February. 63 Peter A. Korn WG’63 writes that he received the 2004 Distinguished Service Award from the International City/County Management Association for career contributions to local-government management. Cited were his innovations in public finance, budgeting, and labor relations, and his work in creating intern opportunities for new graduates entering the field. He served as chief administrator of several local bodies, including Jersey City, N.J., Rochester and New Rochelle, N.Y., Peoria, Ill., and Broward County, Fla.
Idaherma Williams GFA’63 <[email protected]> is a painter and printmaker in Princeton, N.J. In Oct. 2003 she won fourth prize at the annual exhibition of the American Color Print Society. And last May she won the medal of honor for printmaking and the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation award at the annual exhibition of the National Association of Women Artists. Some of her works of woodblock prints were shown in the gala of the Pen and Brush Club of New York last October.
64 Carole MacAdam Alderman CW’64, who teaches Spanish and reading to eighth graders at the Wilbraham (Mass.) Middle School, last spring received a distinguished-teacher award from the Grinspoon Foundation. It is given for excellence in teaching as well as for extracurricular contributions to students and other educators through professional development. She was honored at a banquet along with other recipients, and also received a cash honorarium.
Bruce Lederman W’64 writes that in June he and Ed Zolla W’68 bicycled more than 400 miles from Fairbanks to Valdez in Alaska, ferried to Whittier, and then rode on to Anchorage. The trip took six days. The most challenging one-day ride was 105 miles, highlighted by a six-mile hill, weaving through glacier-covered mountains, leading to the Thompson Pass and then down to Valdez. Bruce retired in 2000, after 30 years as a senior partner of Latham & Watkins, an international law firm. Recently he, Ed, and Joe Hurwich W’68 formed Investment Equity Capital, LLC, to purchase control positions in troubled companies (www.iecap.com).
Steven H. Steinglass W’64, who has served as dean of Cleveland State University’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law since 1996, will be stepping down as dean and returning to the faculty at the end of the current academic year. The author of a two-volume treatise, Section 1983 Litigation in State Courts, he has argued two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. And he co-wrote The Ohio Constitution: A Reference Guide, which will be published by Greenwood Press early this year. With the demands of the deanship behind him, he plans to spend more time with his family and more time at his cabin on an island in the northern part of Lake Michigan. With his wife, Dianne, he is also planning to travel the length of the Lewis & Clark Trail. He noted that “[w]e will not take the 28 months that it took Meriwether Lewis and William Clark by boat and portage, but we will drive from St. Louis to the Oregon coast through some of the most beautiful parts of this wonderful country of ours.”
66 Dr. Constance Perin GCP’66, a cultural anthropologist and a visiting scholar in the science, technology, and society program at MIT, recently published her fourth book, Shouldering Risks: The Culture of Control in the Nuclear Power Industry (Princeton University Press).
67 Dr. Marc A. Rosenberg C’67 V’71, Voorhees , N.J., is a veterinarian who has maintained a practice in the Cherry Hill and Voorhees area for the past 32 years. A past-president of the South Jersey Veterinary Medical Association, he has hosted both radio and television shows in the Delaware Valley instructing pet owners on the proper care of pets. He was recently appointed to the New Jersey State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
68 Rynn Berry C’68 G’71 is historical adviser to the North American Vegetarian Society, and the author of a number of books on vegetarianism, including Famous Vegetarians and Their Favorite Recipes and Food for the Gods: Vegetarianism and the World’s Religions. In his latest book, Hitler: Neither Vegetarian Nor Animal Lover (published last year by Pythagorean Publishers) he debunks the widely credited myth that Hitler was both an animal lover and an ethical vegetarian.
Lawrence Kramer C’68 wrote Opera and Modern Culture: Wagner and Strauss, which was published last year by the University of California Press. He is the author of six other books.
Neal Pollock C’68 has retired as a program manager for the U.S. Navy after almost 40 years of civilian service. He recently returned from the Shongololo Express train tour of South Africa and Namibia, and he received the International Travel News 100 Nations Award.
69 Dr. Charles P. O’Brien GM’69 is vice-chair of psychiatry and director of the Center for the Study of Addictions at the Penn School of Medicine and director of psychiatric research at the Philadelphia Veteran’s Administration Medical Center. Invited by the Academisch Medisch Centrum and the University of Amsterdam, he gave The Anatomy Lesson on Nov. 18. He presented the work of his team at Penn and the Philadelphia VAMC on brain mechanisms and new treatments for addiction. A tradition dating back to 1563, as a way of educating Amsterdam’s citizens about science, The Anatomy Lesson is now a week-long event, consisting of the public presentation at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam’s famous concert hall, a concert by the Symphony Orchestra of Amsterdam, and an art exhibition.

Jeanne Murray Walker Gr’74 is a professor of English at the University of Delaware and the mother of two children. She gives poetry readings and teaches workshops around the country and abroad. John E. FitzGerald III L’75 G’77, Palm Springs, Calif., was awarded a Jefferson Bronze Medallion last May. He is president of the United Way of the Desert, president of the Desert Bar Association, vice president of the Palm Springs Desert Museum, and treasurer of the Desert Youth Foundation. He serves on the governing board of the Desert Regional Medical Center, on the board of the Palm Springs Boys and Girls Club, and on the court-community planning committee of Riverside County.

Jerry Marcus EE’76 WG’79 writes, “This summer I joined Banc of America Securities located in Manhattan as managing director, leaving Bear Stearns after nine years. I will continue to do what I have done for over 15 years, which is to serve a senior investment banker working with retailers. Also, my wife, Ivy, and I have three children. The oldest, Jason A. Marcus C’05, is going to graduate Penn this year, another son is a senior in Scarsdale (N.Y.) High School and thinking about colleges, and our daughter is entering 10th grade.”
Kip Evan Steinberg C’76 was named a “Northern California Super Lawyer” in the September edition of San Francisco magazine. A certified specialist in immigration and nationality law, he practices in San Rafael, Calif. He was co-counsel in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Cardoza-Fonseca v. INS, which established the standard of proof for refugees in political-asylum cases. And he has served as an adjunct professor at Hastings College of the Law. Dr. Paul N. Lanken GM’77, professor of medicine and medical ethics in the Medical School, has been appointed associate dean for professionalism and humanism; he has been an attending physician in the pulmonary, allergy and critical-care division since 1978.. A senior fellow at Penn’s Center for Bioethics, he is interested in the ethics of intensive-care situations, such as withholding and withdrawing life support, informed consent of critically ill patients, and the allocation of scarce and expensive resources.

Robert M. Lippman C’78 has been elected president of the Defense Trial Lawyers Association of Western New York for 2005. Bob, who is managing attorney of Lippman O’Connor, and his wife, Rita, live in Buffalo with their sons, Matthew (nine) and David (seven).
Alfred W. Putnam Jr. L’78, a managing partner of the Philadelphia-based law firm of Drinker, Biddle & Reath LLP, was elected last year chair of the trustees of Jefferson Health System, Inc. He has served on the board since its founding in 1995, and most recently was chair of its governance committee; in that role he helped guide the system through its successful restructuring in 2003.
David Z. Seide C’78 G’78 joined the law firm of Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, Hale & Dorr LLP in September, as a counsel in its securities department and based in its Washington office. For 12 years he had served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles.

Galetta C’79 GM’87, the Van Meter Professor of Neurology and Ophthalmology, is director of the neuro-ophthalmology division and director of neurological training at the Penn School of Medicine. In November he was recognized by the Association of American Medical Colleges with a Robert J. Glaser AOA Distinguished Teacher Award for his efforts to provide the nation’s next generation of doctors with an outstanding educational experience.

He has written a textbook, Physical Rehabilitation’s Role in Disability Management (Elsevier/W.B. Saunders). A prolific writer, he has also published over 80 articles, and three book chapters. David is married to Leslie Buksar Clifton (27 years) and together they have four children, Brooke, Jena, Taylor, and Troy, and live in Upper Providence.
Lisa R. Jacobs W’80, Newtown, Pa., is a partner in the Philadelphia office of the law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP, and concentrates her practice on domestic and international corporate matters, and venture and banking finance. In September she was named to a three-year term on the executive council of the business-law section of the Pennsylvania Bar Association; and in October she was appointed to a two-year term on the advisory committee of the Pennsylvania Corporation Bureau. An elected township committeewoman, in September she was also appointed for a four-year term on the Newtown Township Planning Commission.

Michael J. Bellissimo C’81 and Barbara A. Bellissimo W’82 have made the move back to the ‘right’ coast after almost 16 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. Their new homestead is the island of Martha’s Vineyard, where she is executive director of the Martha’s Vineyard Donor’s Collaborative (www.mvdonors.org) and from where she also runs her leadership-coaching business for women (www.coaching angels.net). Michael, meanwhile, is doing the weekly commute to Manhattan, where he is a senior director at Sun Microsystems, focused on financial services and capital markets. Their daughter, Elisabeth, now 12 and a California native, is learning to enjoy the seasons, especially the winter. Dr. Francisco Gonzalez-Scarano GM’81, professor and chair of neurology and professor of microbiology at the University, has been appointed to the national advisory neurological disorders and stroke council of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. He will serve through July 2008.
Brian Kerester W’81 writes that he and Bob Kelly W’81 recently completed a hike to the summit of Mt. Whitney, at 14,496 ft., the highest mountain in the lower 48 states. The 22-mile round-trip hike took 15 hours.

Sean Nataro C’83 writes, “I’ve been playing ice hockey in Westchester, N.Y., with two other alumni, Peter Noris W’78 and Nolan Kealy EAS’03. Nolan and I play against Peter in one league, while the three of us are on the same team in a second league. While most of the talk in the locker room is about hockey, the three of us occasionally discuss Penn. Nolan updates us on recent events while Peter and I recall the old days. The hockey highlight so far was a game at Madison Square Garden in Dec. 2003 following a New York Rangers game. While Nolan and I try to forget the score (Peter’s team won), we all had a great time skating on the Garden ice. We’re hoping our teams finish on top of our league this year, so the three of us can head to the playoffs in Toronto in June.”

89 Dr. Chris Feudtner G’89 Gr’95 M’95 is a pediatrician at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He wrote Bittersweet: Diabetes, Insulin, and the Transformation of Illness, which was published last year by the University of North Carolina Press. The first book-length study of diabetes in 20th-century America, it focuses on the medical archives and letters of patients, their family members and the staff of the famed Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.
Gabrielle D. Greer C’89 was recently promoted to senior corporate attorney for Caterpillar S.A.R.L. in Geneva. She provides legal services for Caterpillar Inc. in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

He writes, “The company’s business mix reflects the traditional mainstays of the local economy, including real estate development, resorts and agriculture, although its approach is very unconventional in its attempt to integrate them in an environmentally conscious manner.”

In a period of six months I quit my job in equity research at Credit Suisse First Boston to take an opportunity to following Bob Dylan and his band on tour, working part-time for them as a roadie, and it has been amazing. I was able to hang out with Bob backstage after his concert in Irvine, Calif., and he is as amazing as you would think. No plans to return to the financial world just yet, although my boss has been asking me to call him when I get back to New York. Currently I am still traveling with Dylan and am in the process of starting my own record label, Katz’s Deli, and am looking for talented, unsigned folk artists and bands.”

Eileen M. McCarthy EAS’02 W’02 and Jason S. Feldman EAS’02 became engaged at the beach in Sea Bright, N.J., on June 19. The wedding will take place in Sept. 2005, with Jason’s brother, Michael Feldman C’05, as best man.

Kristen Olander C’02 GEd’04 married Adam Engler EAS’02 on Aug. 21. Friends and family celebrated the wedding at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, followed by a reception at the Omni Hotel. Alumni in the wedding party included bridesmaid Carolyn Eckert C’02, groomsmen Jonathan Tyburski W’02 and Evan Randall EAS’02, organist Louis Becht C’02, and best man Adam Winik C’02. Other alumni attending included Kristen’s parents, Charles Olander C’73 and Dianne Olander Nu’73, Shaun Byrnes W’01, Elizabeth Beothy C’02, Craig Gorman C’02, Krista Pohl EAS’01, Frances Wu EE’02, Meagan McGowan C’04 GEd’05, Melissa Tamez EAS’02, Jeffrey Sinder W’02, and Johanna Licciardello Tyburski W’00, along with fellow Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity brothers Mendel Hui W’00, Alexander Davie C’00, Matthew Mongon W’01, Richard Kramer W’02, Jonathan Prin C’02, and Benjamin Benulis EAS’03. Kristen and Adam enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon on a cruise throughout the Caribbean. She is currently completing her school-counseling certification at Masterman High School in Center City Philadelphia, and he is a third-year Ph.D. student in the Biophysical Engineering Laboratory at Penn Engineering.
