Harry Rothstein W’43 wrote a playlet that was performed at a brunch of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Alumni Association celebrating Ben Franklin’s 300th birthday. Harry, who was in Punchbowl 1939, played the part of Ben Franklin; his wife, Arlene, played Ben’s long-suffering companion, Deborah.

Described in a press release as “a grown-up approach to the Internet,” it debuted earlier this year. “It’s an Internet salon where arts connoisseurs exchange pointed comments about the cultural scene in Philadelphia and beyond. It emphasizes sophisticated opinion and insight, as opposed to mere Where To Go information.” Dan had launched such a “marketplace of ideas” in a number of earlier local publications, the Welcomat (1981-93, now known as Philadelphia Weekly), Seven Artsmagazine (1993-94), and Philadelphia Forum (1996-98).

Norman MacAfee C’65 read a poem he had written the day before for a celebration of what would have been the 80th birthday of Robert Kennedy (1925-1968) at the U.S. Capitol on Nov. 16. The poem, “For Robert Kennedy’s 80th Birthday Celebration,” is to be published online in Omega 6. That issue, titled Life During the Coup, also includes, and was inspired by, another poem of his, “Life During the Coup” (2000-02). And another long poem, “The Coming of Fascism to America,” was published in Jacket in April. Judy Dischell Lalli CW’70 GEd’71 writes that she has retired from classroom teaching after a wonderful 35-year career. She is grateful for the education she received at Penn, preparing her for teaching with a minimum of methods courses and a well-rounded liberal arts education. She will continue to teach graduate-education courses for Wilkes and Drexel universities, and to write. Her most recent book, All Kinds of Ways to Be Smart!, a book for children about multiple intelligences, was recently published by Kagan Publishers. Judy and her husband, Tony, are looking forward to moving from the suburbs back to Philadelphia, and she is looking forward to taking courses and pursuing other interests in the city she fell in love with while at Penn.

Henry E. Nass C’71, New York, has “recently established the Center for Sudoku Innovation and Study to develop materials and products relating to the very popular sudoku puzzle. Already on the drawing board is a board game and a new angle on the usual newspaper presentation. Both developments use colored squares, in place of the now standard use of numerals. The 9×9 grid remains exactly the same. It may turn out that some people who are number-phobic would try the same puzzle if the cells’ content were colors instead. It might also present a totally different challenge to the present number-puzzle fan. Anish Kumar GAr’90 GFA’90 is an associate principal and director of the urban-design-practice group of the firm Hillier Architects. In February he spoke on its redevelopment plan for downtown Trenton’s waterfront at the New Jersey Future’s Redevelopment Forum. He will speak also on “Diverse Perspectives on Designing Environments for the Creative Economy” at the Global Creative Economy Summit in Philadelphia in June.
Greg Knupp EE’90 was ordained to be a Baptist minister last August and completed a master’s of divinity from Bob Jones University in December. He writes that after Penn he spent a decade in contract work for U.S. intelligence agencies, during which he received a master’s in engineering from Virginia Tech (1993), and later founded a consulting firm in the intelligence field. “The Lord saved me and gave me Keri, a great wife of 12+ years, and four children.” He has worked and studied in Greenville, S.C., for the past five years, but is now prayerfully seeking his first pastorate.

Danielle Davis C’98 is a Ph.D. student in clinical and developmental psychology at Bryn Mawr College. Last year she received a Geraldine Marren Fellowship from the Philadelphia branch of the American Association of University Women.

Andrew Ross W’99 works at a consulting firm that helps non-profits form business ventures; he recently became president of the Potomac (Md.) Chamber of Commerce. His wife, Paula, runs her own environmental-risk communications company. They also have a side business, Andy’s Parties, planning and running full-service birthday parties for children (ages three to eight) in the D.C. area. And [as of January], they were expecting their first child in March: They have already invited friends and family to the first birthday party.

We’ve been called ‘daily candy for guys’ and already have been featured in the Post, The New York Observer, and the Daily News.We’ve been working really hard to create a voice and a brand that resonates with post-college guys. Our plan is to expand to other cities once we’re huge here, but that’s a step we’re not quite ready for yet.”

Jabari Evans C’04, Chicago, as Naledge, has signed a recording agreement with Rawkus Records and Hustle Period Entertainment; his debut album is due out this summer. He was quoted in a press release: “This deal is monumental for me. Not because it’s my first record deal, but because it’s a perfect marriage of a brand with an artist. I grew up off of the catalog of the old Rawkus roster. It inspired me to become an emcee.”
