Warren Rehm Monsees W’43 is the former president of the Putnam Rolling Ladder Co., Inc., in New York, which makes custom rolling ladders for homes, chain stores, and telephone exchanges. With his son and current president, Gregg Peters Monsees W’71, he was featured in the September issue of Traditional Home magazine in celebration of the firm’s centenary.

Harry Rothstein W’43 wrote a playlet that was performed at a brunch of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Alumni Association celebrating Ben Franklin’s 300th birthday. Harry, who was in Punchbowl 1939, played the part of Ben Franklin; his wife, Arlene, played Ben’s long-suffering companion, Deborah.

Over the years he helped a number of now-famous actors get an early break, but insists he did not discover them: “I don’t believe you can discover actors. You give them the chance to audition. Myers W’54, professor of otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, was recently named a distinguished professor there, in recognition of his international prominence in otolaryngology and his accomplishments over the last 30 years. He was selected as the 2005 recipient of the Allegheny County Medical Society Ralph C. Wilde Award.

Dan Rottenberg C’64 is editor of Broad Street Review, a new arts and culture website supported by the University of the Arts (www.broadstreetreview.com). Described in a press release as “a grown-up approach to the Internet,” it debuted earlier this year. “It’s an Internet salon where arts connoisseurs exchange pointed comments about the cultural scene in Philadelphia and beyond. It emphasizes sophisticated opinion and insight, as opposed to mere Where To Go information.” Dan had launched such a “marketplace of ideas” in a number of earlier local publications, the Welcomat (1981-93, now known as Philadelphia Weekly), Seven Artsmagazine (1993-94), and Philadelphia Forum (1996-98).

Dr. Ronald J. Schindler C’64 Gr’78 writes, “I have been working as adjunct faculty in the philosophy department at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pa., teaching introductory courses from the fall to the spring.”

Dr. C. Paul Scott C’64 is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh, who also maintains a private practice as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. Last year he was elected president of the American Balint Society: Balint groups instruct physicians in the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.

Norman MacAfee C’65 read a poem he had written the day before for a celebration of what would have been the 80th birthday of Robert Kennedy (1925-1968) at the U.S. Capitol on Nov. 16. The poem, “For Robert Kennedy’s 80th Birthday Celebration,” is to be published online in Omega 6. That issue, titled Life During the Coup, also includes, and was inspired by, another poem of his, “Life During the Coup” (2000-02). And another long poem, “The Coming of Fascism to America,” was published in Jacket in April. His opera based on the music of Charles Ives, The Death of the Forest,will premiere in Amsterdam next year (www.normanmacafee.com).

James Morrow C’69 wrote The Last Witchfinder, “a historical novel about the birth of the scientific world-view, published in March by William Morrow (no relation). Set in Restoration England and Colonial Philadelphia, among other locales, this comic epic tells of Jennet Stearne, who makes it her life’s mission to bring down the Parliamentary Witchcraft Act of 1604. She also becomes the lover of the young Benjamin Franklin, a fact that helps explain Ben’s lifelong appreciation of older women.”

With the Philadelphia-based law firm of Drinker, Biddle & Reath LLP since 2002, he had spent the preceding 32 years in a variety of roles at Hewlett-Packard.

Judy Dischell Lalli CW’70 GEd’71 writes that she has retired from classroom teaching after a wonderful 35-year career. She is grateful for the education she received at Penn, preparing her for teaching with a minimum of methods courses and a well-rounded liberal arts education. She will continue to teach graduate-education courses for Wilkes and Drexel universities, and to write. Her most recent book, All Kinds of Ways to Be Smart!, a book for children about multiple intelligences, was recently published by Kagan Publishers. Judy and her husband, Tony, are looking forward to moving from the suburbs back to Philadelphia, and she is looking forward to taking courses and pursuing other interests in the city she fell in love with while at Penn.

Henry E. Nass C’71, New York, has “recently established the Center for Sudoku Innovation and Study to develop materials and products relating to the very popular sudoku puzzle. Already on the drawing board is a board game and a new angle on the usual newspaper presentation. Both developments use colored squares, in place of the now standard use of numerals. The 9×9 grid remains exactly the same. It may turn out that some people who are number-phobic would try the same puzzle if the cells’ content were colors instead. It might also present a totally different challenge to the present number-puzzle fan. Joseph C. Vignola W’71 in February joined the Philadelphia brokerage Janney Montgomery Scott LLC as senior vice president and manager for its Philadelphia public-finance division. Previously he was executive director and chief executive officer of the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority, which oversees the city’s financial operations. Earlier he was a councilman and the city controller.

Glenn Blumenfeld W’82 L’85 is president and principal of Tactix Real Estate Advisors, a national tenant-representation firm that has handled many of the largest recent leasing transactions in the Delaware Valley, including Sunoco’s world headquarters; it also represented his former law firm, Dechert LLP, and Woodcock Washburn, the two anchor tenants in the new Cira Centre building by 30th Street Station. Earlier this year he was named 2005 Broker of the Year, Southeastern Pennsylvania/South Jersey, by Mack Cali. He lives in Wynnewood, Pa., with his wife, Susan B. Laurie B. Kazenoff C’82 is a board member of the NephCure Foundation; one of her three sons suffers from Nephrotic Syndrome (FSGS), a rare kidney disease. She is pleased to announce that a November fundraiser, honoring the dedicated work of Dr. Howard Trachtman M’78 (a pediatric nephrologist at Schneider Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park, N.Y.), was attended by 700 guests and raised over $180,000 for research.

Lesley Heller C’83 in February opened Lesley Heller, a gallery in Manhattan’s ‘Museum Mile’ on the Upper East Side. A press release stated that it “will feature the compelling and noteworthy work of mid-career artists who have not exhibited publicly in New York for some time.” She worked in galleries and as an art consultant and adviser for the past 15 years, including as founding director of The Work Space Gallery in SoHo.

Randy Malamud C’83 married Nina Gupta; they live in Atlanta with his sons, Jake, 13 (who celebrated his bar-mitzvah in February), and Ben (nine). Nina is a lawyer who specializes in education law, and Randy is a professor of English at Georgia State University; his seventh book, A Cultural History of Animals, is in production and will be published next year.

He was released from the neonatal intensive-care unit only 12 days later, and has been thriving and growing ever since. We couldn’t be more proud of him and his progress!”

Anish Kumar GAr’90 GFA’90 is an associate principal and director of the urban-design-practice group of the firm Hillier Architects. In February he spoke on its redevelopment plan for downtown Trenton’s waterfront at the New Jersey Future’s Redevelopment Forum. He will speak also on “Diverse Perspectives on Designing Environments for the Creative Economy” at the Global Creative Economy Summit in Philadelphia in June.

Greg Knupp EE’90 was ordained to be a Baptist minister last August and completed a master’s of divinity from Bob Jones University in December. He writes that after Penn he spent a decade in contract work for U.S. intelligence agencies, during which he received a master’s in engineering from Virginia Tech (1993), and later founded a consulting firm in the intelligence field. “The Lord saved me and gave me Keri, a great wife of 12+ years, and four children.” He has worked and studied in Greenville, S.C., for the past five years, but is now prayerfully seeking his first pastorate.

Barry E. Moscowitz C’90 writes that in February he became an state administrative-law judge in Newark, N.J. Previously he was an associate at a mid-size law firm, an adjunct professor at Seton Hall University School of Law, and a founding member of the northern New Jersey firm bearing his name. Andrew Ross W’99 works at a consulting firm that helps non-profits form business ventures; he recently became president of the Potomac (Md.) Chamber of Commerce. His wife, Paula, runs her own environmental-risk communications company. They also have a side business, Andy’s Parties, planning and running full-service birthday parties for children (ages three to eight) in the D.C. area. And [as of January], they were expecting their first child in March: They have already invited friends and family to the first birthday party.

We’ve been called ‘daily candy for guys’ and already have been featured in the Post, The New York Observer, and the Daily News.We’ve been working really hard to create a voice and a brand that resonates with post-college guys. Our plan is to expand to other cities once we’re huge here, but that’s a step we’re not quite ready for yet.”

Ross Clark C’04 was mentioned in Variety (Feb. 21) as co-head of a new, film and TV division of the PR firm, Sacks & Co. Their clients include the indie films Old Joy, Things to Do, and Live Free or Die, and the animation unit Frederator Studios (My Life as a Teenage Robot).

Jabari Evans C’04, Chicago, as Naledge, has signed a recording agreement with Rawkus Records and Hustle Period Entertainment; his debut album is due out this summer. He was quoted in a press release: “This deal is monumental for me. Not because it’s my first record deal, but because it’s a perfect marriage of a brand with an artist. I grew up off of the catalog of the old Rawkus roster. It inspired me to become an emcee.”
