49 Tony Franco W’49 in October represented the U.S. in the Gardnar Mulloy Cup Tennis Matches for men 80 and over, in Antalya, Turkey. He played #2 singles, winning all four of his matches against Germany, Canada, Sweden, and Great Britain, and as the U.S. retained the cup. The following week, in the Individual World Championships, he reached the semi-finals in singles and won the doubles with teammate, Graydon Nichols. Tony made the team after winning the 2004 National Grass Court Singles Championship (75 & over). In 2005 he was runner-up in the National Grass and Clay Court Singles Championships (80 & over).

1950s

52 Jean Shaw Adelman CW’52, Philadelphia, a retired librarian, served with Global Volunteers in September and October, teaching English to adults and children in southeastern Hungary.

60 Alan B. Miller WG’60, chair, president, and CEO of Universal Health Services, Inc., has been appointed to the board of overseers of the Wharton School. He had served on the graduate executive board from 1996 to 2004.

61 Donald M. Fenmore W’61 practices real estate law in West Los Angeles. In September he received the Executive Director’s Award from the Beverly Hills Bar Association for “distinguished and exemplary service to the association.” He chaired the Bar’s first and second annual golf tournaments; in June when he chairs the third tournament, he will be joined by Sandy, his wife of 36 years—she is also an avid golfer. Don is trying to convince his daughter Tanya, who received her MBA degree from the Harvard Business School in June, to take up golf.

62 Ross S. Preston C’62 Gr’67 writes, “After a career path which included IBM, Bethlehem Steel, WEFA Inc., the University of Pennsylvania, the Economic Council of Canada, Investment Canada, Industry Canada, and WEFA Canada, I find myself retired, as is Judy, my wife of 43 years, at my winter home in Perth, Ont., and at my summer home on Bluff Island, in the Big Rideau Lake near Portland, Ont. My daughter, Elisabeth Preston C’89, her two sons and husband, Oliver, and my son (a Ph.D. candidate in anthropology at Harvard), his wife, Julie, and his son now take up a good deal of our time. Notwithstanding, my first novel, Blind Man’s Bluff, is now complete and will soon be published.”

63 Ronald L. Rose W’63, Birmingham, Mich., a co-leader of the bankruptcy practice group and based in the Bloomfield Hills office of the law firm of Dykema Gossett, is included in The Best Lawyers in America 2006. He has been listed in every edition since it was first published in 1983.

64  Dr. Ronald Kamm C’64 recently appeared as himself in Eagles! The Movie. He analyzed the psyche of  fans from a sport-psychiatrist’s perspective. Last summer he was interviewed on Comcast’s Daily News Live show, on the rift between the Eagles players Terrell Owens and Donovan McNabb. He wrote, “Interviewing Principles for the Psychiatrically Aware Sports Medicine Physician,” the lead article in the October issue of Clinics in Sports Medicine.

65 Karyl Charna Lynn CW’65 writes, “My sixth book, Italian Opera Houses and Festivals, has just been published by Scarecrow Press. The Italian Cultural Institute, the cultural office of the Italian Embassy in Washington, held a book-signing in December.”

68 Lee Eisenberg C’68 ASC’70 was most recently executive vice-president of Lands’ End and is a former editor-in-chief of Esquiremagazine. He wrote The Number: A Completely Different Way To Think About The Rest of Your Life, to be published this month by the Free Press, a division of Simon and Schuster. “The book explores whether baby boomers are prepared to cope financially and emotionally with the rest of their lives and, if not, what they plan to do about it.”

Frederick S. Keller M’68 is professor of interventional radiology and chair of diagnostic radiology at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, where he also serves as director of the Dotter Institute. He was honored last year by having an endowed chair in interventional radiology established in his name by the Cook Group Inc. of Bloomington, Ind. And in September Dr. Keller was named a distinguished fellow of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe.

69 Dr. Stephen Bosniak C’69 (www. eye-lift.com) wrote Beautiful Eye, which was released last year by MD Publishing in New York. It is layperson’s guide to non-invasive rejuvenation of the eyes, brows, and face. He was also elected to the board of the International Society of Cosmetic Laser Surgeons.

Dolf R. DiBiasio WG’69 is a former executive vice president of AOL Time Warner, Inc., in charge of global strategy and investment, and earlier was a senior partner of McKinsey and Co. He was recently appointed chair of the graduate executive board of the Wharton School, which he has served on since 1995.

Dr. Ronald D. Klein C’69 GEd’70 <rklein@gol.com> recently edited Silverfish New Writing Anthology Edition 5, a collection of short stories by authors in Malaysia who write in English. He is professor of English at Hiroshima Jogakuin University, where he has been teaching for 16 years.

Hon. Richard B. Teitelman C’69, a judge of the Supreme Court of Missouri, has been re-elected to the executive board of the American Judicature Society, and nominated to the steering committee of the ABA’s appellate judicial network. Last year he received the distinguished non-alumni award of the Columbia School of Law at the University of Missouri; was keynote speaker at the September meeting of the St. Louis Jewish Community Relations Council; and in October received the St. Louis Historical Society Award.

70 Haroldeane E. Richardson Snell CW’70 received a 2005 Volunteer Service Award from the Roland Tseng College of Extended Learning at California State University Northridge. Deanie, a member of the knowledge-management team at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, has worked closely with Tseng College in launching an innovative, interdisciplinary master’s program in knowledge management.

71 Stephen D. Kramer W’71 L’74 has joined the corporate department of the New York law firm of Phillips Nizer LLP. He will also lead its new French-practice group. He is a member of the Union Internationale des Avocats, and also is a licensed certified public accountant.

William B. Patrick C’71 wrote Saving Troy: A Year with Firefighters and Paramedics in a Battered City, which was published last year by Hudson Whitman Publishers. The press release describes it as “a compelling and unique chronicle of a year with professional firefighters and paramedics in a down-at-the-heels, rust-belt city. The author rode along with the members the Troy Fire Department’s 1st Platoon, and has fashioned a vivid story that takes the reader not only inside the action but to the dramatic core of every call he re-creates for us—so close you can almost hear the heart monitor’s buzz … [he] has used his fictional know-how, as well as a screenwriter’s ear for dialogue, to craft this new non-fiction narrative that is unsurpassed in the literature of firefighting.”

72 Arthur H. Finnel W’72 G’74 WG’75 has joined WellGen, Inc., a biotechnology company that develops plant-based health products, as its first chief financial officer. Previously he was executive vice president, treasurer, and chief financial officer of Bionova Holding Corp., an agribusiness biotechnology company.

William G. Kane GRP’72, former principal and partner at Design Workshop, based in Aspen, Colo., returned to the firm in October to work part-time on special projects. From 1996 to last July he was vice president of planning and development for the Aspen Skiing Company.

73 Samuel Feldman C’73, Short Hills, N.J., a member of the Roseland law firm of Orloff, Lowenbach, Stifelman & Siegel, P.A., moderated a seminar, “Attorney Liability after Banco Popular North America v. Gandhi,” at the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education in October. He was the attorney for the prevailing party in the case before the state supreme court. He welcomes his daughter, Marin Feldman L’05, to the ranks of Penn Alumni.

74 Dr. David Bienenfeld C’74 is professor and vice-chair of psychiatry at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, where he directs the residency-training program. Richard B. Cohen W’74, chair and CEO of C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc., has been appointed to the board of overseers of the Wharton School.

Marsha Reines Perelman GCP’74, president of Woodforde Energy, Inc., in Ardmore, Pa., was elected chair of the board of The Franklin Institute in October. The first woman be elected to this position in the institute’s 181-year history, she had chaired its finance and investment and development and government-relations committees.

75  Don Fetterolf C’75 M’79 recently left his position at Highmark Inc. to take the position of corporate vice president for strategic initiatives, at Matria Healthcare, Inc., in Marietta, Ga. The company has a number of divisions in the healthcare field, including disease management, women’s health, and medical-supply manufacture, and operates in the U.S. and overseas.

Craig K. Harding WG’75, chair and CEO of The Harding Group, a private-equity firm which he founded in 1984, has been appointed to the board of overseers of the Wharton School. He chaired the Wharton Fund (1993-95) and the graduate executive board from 1994 till last year; he received Wharton’s Distinguished Service Award in 1995.

Rabbi Goldie Milgram CW’75 writes that she gave birth to three published books in the past 17 months: Reclaiming Judaism as a Spiritual Practice, Meaning and Mitzvah (both published by Jewish Lights), and Make Your Own Bar/Bat Mitzvah (Jossey-Bass). 76 Dr. Nelson Erlick C’76 wrote The Xeno Solution, which was published last year by Forge Books. His second novel, it was described as, “An engrossing, provocative thriller about what can go wrong with a medical breakthrough. [It] provides a terrifying glimpse into the newest procedure for solving the shortage of donor organs: Xenotransplantation, the transplantation of animal organs to humans. Combining the advances of medical science, the competitive battlefield of technology, and the underlying fear of genetic engineering, [it] posits a completely plausible scenario for a potential medical catastrophe. 77 Andrew A. Chirls C’77, a litigation partner with Wolf, Block, Schorr & Solis-Cohen LLP, serves as chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association. In October he was named to the board of The Philadelphia Foundation, the $275-million public-charity community foundation that serves southeastern Pennsylvania. He and his partner, Larry Frankel, live in Center City Philadelphia.

Dr. Jack Ludmir C’77 GM’87 is chair and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital, part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He was recently awarded an honorary doctorate by the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima for his efforts to reduce perinatal and maternal mortality in Peru. He was also recognized by the Peruvian Minister of Health, receiving the Medal to Merit San Bartolome. Ludmir has helped trained healthcare providers by an exchange program of physicians and medical students with Penn, as well as distributing much needed equipment to Peruvian hospitals. Advocating for poor mothers and babies in Peru is a family affair for Ludmir: His father, Dr. Abraham Ludmir GM’56, and his sons, Jonathan Ludmir C’06 and Daniel Ludmir C’09, have been actively involved in helping poor Peruvian women.

79 Neil Plakcy C’79 <plax@bellsouth.net> e-mails, “Mahu, which means homosexual in Hawaiian, is also the title of a mystery novel I have written. Published in August, it has already received rave reviews. In this police procedural set in Honolulu, a detective who has made a career out of finding the truth behind other people’s actions is forced to confront his own homosexuality, while investigating the death of a man whose body is found behind a gay bar in Waikiki (www.mahubooks.com).”

Dr. Jack Sariego C’79 lives and works on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where he is chief of surgery and director of trauma at Ocean Springs Hospital. The Mississippi State Chair for the American College of Surgeons’ committee on trauma, he is also active at the national level. A lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, he has been called to active duty twice in the past few years: He was deployed for six months to Afghanistan and southwest Asia during Operation Enduring Freedom, and to Europe and southwest Asia for Operation Iraqi Freedom. He wrote in late September that he had “recently ridden out the tempest and endured the ravages of Hurricane Katrina” with his wife, Lauren, and 11-year-old twins, Andrew and Jessica.

Dr. Patricia Stranahan Gr’79 has been appointed president of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia. Most recently she was a research associate at the Fairbank Center at Harvard University.

80 Beth J. Kaplan W’80 WG’81, managing director of Axcel Partners, LLC, has been appointed to the board of overseers of the Wharton School. She chaired the undergraduate executive board from 1998 till last year.

Anne G. Peach GNu’80 has been named vice president of nursing for the Orlando Regional Healthcare System. She continues as chief operating officer for the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando, a division of the system.

Dr. Steven Sachs C’80 is a general dentist practicing in Harriman, N.Y., and lives in White Plains, with his wife, Bonnie. Her daughter, Jane, is now a sophomore at Ohio State University. In his spare time Steve is an avid bird and nature photographer. 81 Dr. Stephen J. Betchen SW’81 GrS’86 maintains a full-time practice in couples therapy in Cherry Hill, N.J. His recently published second book, Intrusive Partners-Elusive Mates: The Pursuer-Distancer Dynamic in Couples (Routledge, 2005), was nominated for the Society for Sex Therapy and Research’s Professional Book Award. His article, “Husbands Who Use Sexual Dissatisfaction to Balance the Scales of Power in Their Dual-Career Marriages,” is to be published soon in the Journal of Family Psychotherapy. He is one of the few couples therapists in this country certified as a supervisor by both the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists.

Steve Goldman C’81 W’81 writes, “My wife, Kris Goldman, and I have opened our first iSold It on eBay store in a suburb of Salt Lake City. We also signed a lease to open our second store [this month]; we plan to open three additional in Salt Lake and one in Park City. Dr. Ralph M. Rosato C’81 was recently elected the 50th president of the Florida Society of Plastic Surgeons. “My daughter Danielle will be applying to Penn in 2007 as a double legacy. Albert Diaz W’83 has been appointed a judge of the North Carolina Business Court, which handles complex issues of corporate and commercial law as a specialized forum of the state’s trial division. He has served as a state superior-court judge since Nov. 2001.

Lisa Kaner C’83, a shareholder with the law firm Markowitz, Herbold, Glade & Mehlhaf in Portland, Ore., recently celebrated the first anniversary of the dedication of the Oregon Holocaust Memorial. She joined the effort to build the memorial in 1997, and assumed the role of chair in 2003. After a heated six-year legal battle (over its first site), the memorial was finally unveiled in late 2004, in downtown Portland’s Washington Park.

84 Geralyn Rella Breig W’84 has been appointed senior vice president and brand president of Avon Products, Inc. Based in Manhattan, she will be a member of the global operating council and will be responsible for global research and development and marketing activities.

86 Edward Anton C’86 works fulltime in the ministry of the Hampton Roads Church in Virginia Beach, Va., with his wife, Deb, and four children. He wrote Repentance: A Cosmic Shift of Mind and Heart, which was recently published.

Nancy Meisinger Nu’86 in October was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame of Central Bucks (Pa.) High School.

Rod J. Rosenstein W’86 on July 12 was sworn in as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland. He was nominated by President George W. Bush on May 23, and his nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 1. Rod previously served in the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington as principal deputy assistant attorney general for the tax division. He lives in Bethesda with his wife and their two daughters.

Jonathan D. Shaffer C’86 <jshaffer@smith pachter.com> recently had an article on Medicare-contracting reform published in the BNA Federal Contracts Report. The son of Charles A. Shaffer W’60 L’63, he is a partner in the law firm of Smith, Pachter, McWhorter & Allen in Vienna, Va., where he practices in government contracts and construction law, and commercial litigation. Jonathan, his wife, Robin Shaffer, and 12-year-old son, Daniel, live in the suburbs of Washington, where they frequently run into fellow alumni.

Joshua R. Slavitt C’86 is a registered patent attorney and partner with Synnestvedt & Lechner, LLP, Philadelphia’s oldest intellectual-property law firm; he concentrates on chemical and pharmaceutical patent applications, and IP counseling, opinion work, and litigation. In October he became a co-chair of the Philadelphia chapter of the Licensing Executives Society.

87 Dr. James N. Canonica G’87, Mt. Laurel, N.J., has been appointed dean of students at Camden County College. For the last 14 years he was director of academic advising at the Community College of Philadelphia, where he had also taught information systems.

Robert K. Fitts C’87 and Sarah Watkins Fitts C’87 are pleased to announce that his latest book, Remembering Japanese Baseball: An Oral History of the Game, has been published by Southern Illinois University Press. The book is the first oral history of Japanese baseball available in English.

Keith E. Gottfried W’87 was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in October as general counsel for the Department of Housing and Urban Development. From 2000 to 2004 he had served in senior executive positions at Borland Software Corporation, a global software company based in Scotts Valley, Calif.

Donald Orloski EAS’87 is a manager of global-manufacturing compliance in Pfizer’s facility at Peapack, N.J. From June to December he helped Family Health International evaluate their HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention programs in Lusaka, Zambia.

88 Eric Bradlow W’88 is a professor of marketing and statistics at the Wharton School who serves as the academic director of the Wharton Small Business Development Center. He was the recipient of both the graduate and undergraduate Excellence in Teaching Awards in 2004. And he serves on the governing boards of Marketing Science and the Journal of Marketing Research. Last year he was appointed the first K.P. Chao Professor (which was endowed by K.P. Chao, chair of Hong Kong-based Novel Enterprises Ltd., and founder of Dragon Air).

92 Dr. David Brailer Gr’92 is assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in charge of electronic medical records. He coordinated the federal response to provide the medical records of people in the Gulf Coast areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina to doctors treating them. It involves the various agencies working with health plans, pharmacy-benefit managers, and drugstore chains to locate surviving records and make them available to physicians.

Waterman-Storer Gr’95, an associate professor in the cell-biology department at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., last September received a 2005 NIH Director’s Pioneer Award for her cutting-edge work on the mechanisms of cell migration. Granted to “exceptionally creative scientists who take innovative approaches to major challenges in biomedical research,” the award provides a research budget of up to $500,000 in direct costs per year for five years.

96 Roseanne Adderley Gr’96, an associate professor of history at Tulane University, was last year awarded a research fellowship by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. She conducted research at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library on “Rape and the Middle Passage: Uncovering Histories of Sexual Violence in the Transatlantic Slave Trade.” Her dissertation, ‘New Negroes from Africa’: Culture and Community Among Liberated Africans in the Bahamas and Trinidad, 1810-1900, will be published this year by Indiana University Press.

Dr. Srini Venkatesh WG’03 has joined Bausch & Lomb as senior director, product development in global research and development; he is based in the firm’s R&D center in Rochester, N.Y. Previously he was director of pre-clinical development for Bristol-Myers Squibb.

 04 John M. Evans GFA’04, Philadelphia, has joined Hillier Architecture as an intern architect in its historic-preservation practice group. A former architectural conservator with the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust, he is working on the Lincoln Cottage Visitor Education Center in Washington.

Donna Gentile O’Donnell Gr’04 is managing director of the Eastern Technology Council, which specializes in life-science initiatives and enhancing Philadelphia’s biotechnology and research industries. In September she spoke at the Penn Bookstore on her book, Provider of Last Resort: The Story of the Closure of the Philadelphia General Hospital.

Eli Portnoy C’04 in July founded Buena Chamba: Latino Hire (www.latinohire.com), a bilingual service that brings together Hispanic job seekers with potential employers for free. He was also selected by Business Week Online as one of the best entrepreneurs under 25; Telemundo (New York) and WABC-TV ran segments on his company last October and Crain’s New York Business mentioned the company during its launch in August.

 05 Alex Feldman C’05, Bryn Mawr, Pa., was an intern last summer with the urban-design practice group of Hillier Architecture in Philadelphia. He is now studying at the London School of Economics.

Caitlin Lukens C’05 and Kent Lasnoski C’05 joined their lives in Holy Matrimony at St. Agatha-St. James Church on May 7. The choir from the Sunday 10 p.m. Mass sang, led by Anne McGuire C’05.
