Healthy Cities/Healthy Women Conference

After important events in Miami, New York and Los Angeles, Penn’s HEALTHY CITIES: HEALTHY WOMEN event series is headed to London, Washington, and Philadelphia. The HEALTHY CITIES: HEALTHY WOMEN events highlight the unique challenges faced by women and girls in urban areas across the globe with a focus on raising visibility and fostering solutions. Today over 3.3 billion people, more than half the world’s population, live in urban areas. The built environment of cities presents barriers to healthy living for women and girls. At the same time, women have an extraordinarily powerful role in influencing the health of their children, families and communities and offer a unique opportunity to improve cities for all. Hosted by Penn Alumni, Penn Nursing, and the Trustees’ Council of Penn Women, the upcoming dates for HEALTHY CITIES: HEALTHY WOMEN events are: London on Tues., Sept. 17; Washington on Wed., Oct. 30, and Philadelphia on Thurs. Metro New Jersey. On June 4, we will host our Wesley A. Stanger Jr. Annual Spring Installation Dinner; we will install our new board members and honor the outstanding Thomas H. Newmann Scholars from New Jersey. Our special guest speaker that evening will be Ezekiel J. Emanuel, MD, PhD, the Diane v.S Levy and Robert M. Levy Professor, vice-provost for global initiatives, chair of the Department of Medical Ethics & Health Policy, and a Penn Integrates Knowledge (PIK) professor. Michigan. The Penn and Wharton Club of Michigan will be hosting a talk on May 21, by Craig Carnaroli W’85, Penn’s executive vice president and top non-academic officer. He was instrumental in the Penn Connects campus expansion and will be speaking to the Club about Penn’s recent achievements, long term plans, and how Penn worked together with the City of Philadelphia to make this a success. Northern California. Join us at our spring and summer events in the Bay Area including a polo-match social with our Ivy League friends on May 19; hosting the annual Kaplan MBA Forum in Northern California on July 29; monthly happy hours; outings to cheer on the Giants and A’s, and our annual Land’s End Hike in June which always gathers a crowd of alumni, friends, and family. Speaking of our Giants, the Penn Glee Club will be passing through town on Memorial Day weekend and performing at the opening of the Giants game on Sunday May 26! Philadelphia. On Sat., June 1, Club members will attend the rugby championships from midday 12pm to 6pm, at PPL Park, 1 Stadium Drive in Chester. We will be attending on the Saturday but members are encouraged to also attend on the Sunday. Buy tickets early for discounts: single-day ticket, $25; general two-day admission, $35 (regular price, $45). Penn Alumni Club of Philadelphia members are invited to join the Penn Rugby Alumni who will host a tailgate at the park; this is free for all Penn Alumni and their guests, and we will make quite a few toasts to dear old Pennsylvania! The Penn Rugby Alumni Board will provide free transportation to and from Penn to PPL Park on both days. More details on transportation will be announced at a later date. Members will also be at PPL Park on Sun., June 23, for another match: come cheer for the Philadelphia Union as they take on the New York Red Bulls, starting at 5pm. $35 for members, $42 per person for non-members. On Sat., June 29, Club members are going to the Philabundance Hunger Relief Center, 3616 South Galloway St. in South Philly, from 8:30am to midday. We will volunteer sorting and packing supplemental and emergency food items there. Everyone must wear sneakers or closed-toe shoes to work in the warehouse. Portland, Ore. The Penn Club of Portland’s Ben’s Birthday Happy Hour and Winter and Almost-Spring Luncheons were a great success. San Diego. First Friday at NTC Liberty Station. You are invited to the NTC Promenade Arts & Cultural District for an evening of happenings with fellow Penn Alumni on Fri., June 7, 6pm.
