1940s
’43 | Louis E. Leopold W’43, Hollidaysburg, Pa., writes that he and his wife, Anna, had a second retirement in September, this time as volunteers from the Southwestern Pennsylvania’s Heritage Preservation Commission (U.S. Department of Interior). For a decade they served as Wayfinder columnists for Westsylvania, the commission’s regional heritage and lifestyle magazine, finding, photographing, and writing about the area’s attractions. In 1985 Lou retired as a political scientist at Penn State-Altoona, where he particularly enjoyed European-Mediterranean-Middle East security challenges, especially Cyprus. His teaching integrated candid photo images, “much as Prof. Mike Dorezas used in his 1940s Economic and Political Geography classes.” After Penn State, they were recruited into the National Park Service America’s industrial-heritage project; Lou and Anna were impressed by what the British were doing to save their canal and industrial history. As they once used to backpack in Europe, they have now got to know central and southwestern Pennsylvania really well. Fittingly, in a family of teachers, their last article was on the area’s one-room schools.
’48 | Ed Rosenbaum W’48 reports that he retired last year from his consulting and tax practice in northern Virginia, and with his wife, Ruth, divides time between Ocean City, Md., and Boynton Beach, Fla. His “younger daughter, Marjorie, recently married Mitchell Bassman, whose father, Herman ‘Reds’ Bassman, intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown giving Ursinus College a 7-6 victory over the Penn eleven in 1934.”
’49 | Melvin Finkelstein W’49 celebrated his 80th birthday on Jan. 25. The former head of House of Westmore, Inc., a cosmetics and beauty-supplies manufacturer and distributor, retired when he sold the business in 1978. He is the creator of the Finkelstein Prep for Prep Scholarship at Penn and Subscriptions for Success, a program to provide magazines in schools for disadvantaged students. He is the father of Lawrence Finkelstein W’73 L’76, Dr. Amy H. Finkelstein CW’76 M’80 GM’84, and William P. Finkelstein W’80 WG’82, and the grandfather of Andrew J. Finkelstein W’02. There are at least a dozen other alumni members of the Finkelstein family.

Emily Pritchard Cary CW’52 wrote The Treasure of Juniper Junction, her fourth romantic mystery; she credits the inspiration for the setting to the summer she spent at the University of Arizona archaeological field school on a fellowship granted by the late Dr. Loren Eiseley Gr’37. The third edition of her Pritchard Family History, tracing the line back to the Jamestown immigrant, was published last month by Heritage Press. She was also designated a prize winner for the fifth consecutive year in the Southern California Genealogical Society’s annual writing contest; several of her prize-winning stories excerpted from Growing Up Only, about her childhood in Pittsburgh during the Depression, have appeared in anthologies and on op-ed pages. To beat the Arizona summer heat, she and her husband visit Britain annually to delve into historical, musical, and genealogical resources.
Sam Diamond W’52 L’55 wrote in March, “I now must decide what I want to do when I grow up. This month I retire from the law firm I co-founded in 1960. Last April I taught my last class of Benjamin Franklin Scholars. I’ve had a wonderful professional life as a lawyer, with great, long-term colleagues. Miriam and I have been married over 52 years and counting. Our three children delight us, and have supplied us with two wonderful daughters-in-law, a great son-in-law (a Penn math professor), and seven grandchildren. Now for a bit of R & R, engaging in public service, and maybe a bit of curmudgeonly writing.”
Janice Auritt Oser CW’52 wrote in early February that she “has started Eldercountry.com, an Internet magazine for ‘spirited seniors.’ The first issue is slated for April-May, and will include a ‘Spotlight’ feature profiling Claire Mamourian Harootunian Ed’52. Claire started out studying theater and was a member of Penn Players, but went on to become a distinguished sculptor, painter, and collage artist. A subsequent issue will turn the Spotlight on the Hon. Norma Levy Shapiro L’51, a senior Judge on the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and a well-known and much-honored Philadelphian.”
’54 | Russel Kully W’54 continues as an of counsel with the Washington-based law firm of Arnold & Porter, principally representing large nonprofit entities. He and Hannah travel to Australia at least twice a year to be with their family there, “principally three lovely young ladies,” during which on four occasions, they have “bush camped” in the deep Outback, earning the respect but not the envy of their friends. Among a number of other commitments to organizations within their Pasadena community, they are both very involved with the art component of the Huntington Library, having given or promised their respective collections of British and American prints there.
Paul C. T. Loo WG’54, an executive director of the Hawaii offices of Morgan Stanley, in March was inducted into the Hawaii Business Hall of Fame. A former associate trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, a former president of the Honolulu Stock Exchange, he is a founding director of Hawaii Pacific University.
Robert R. Saylor SW’54 writes that last year “I self-published Guide to Successful Interviewing & Interrogation In Law Enforcement. The 150-page book has been favorably commented upon by law enforcement officials and Dr. Henry C. Lee, a renowned forensic pathologist.”
Norman J. Wohlken C’54 writes, “I saw my classmate Roger P. Craton W’54 on Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Verdi Opera Festival in Santa Barbara, Calif., and again on Sunday, Feb. 25, in Los Olivos, Calif., (a town made famous by the movie Sideways), where he is exhibiting his color photographs of Antarctica at the Wildling Art Museum through June 17 (www.wildlingmuseum.org). The exhibit, Fragile Environments: Antarctica and The Everglades, features the frozen desert scapes of Antarctica, rendered in pigment prints by him and the lush, verdant swamplands of Florida captured in black and white images by Clyde Butcher. According to the museum, ‘these contrasting works are a rich visual testament to the extraordinary diversity and beauty of this planet. ’55 | Dr. Bettyruth Walter CW’55 G’77 Gr’85 has recently returned from several weeks in India, where she enjoyed a biking trip through Rajasthan. Afterwards, she and her husband, Donald J. Goldberg W’51, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in London. She still teaches in the youth-educated-for-tomorrow program in Philadelphia and an adult-education course in linguistics. She also serves on the executive committee of the Penn Fund, interviews prospective freshman for Penn, and continues to row her shell on the Schuylkill River. She also sponsors a Penn freshman from West Virginia through her Walter Scholarship, which she established in celebration of her 50th Penn Reunion.
’56 | Irene Sofian Herman CW’56 was included in the book Feminists Who Changed America 1963-1975, which was published by University of Illinois Press. It “presents biographies of 2,200 women and men whose successful actions created the modern women’s movement; the foremost criterion was being a changemaker.”

William Seidman C’58 writes, “My book Inevitable Incompetence describes the reasons for the soaring costs of medical care: increasing medical injuries and deaths, fragmentation, increasing ‘hand-offs,’ bureaucratization, and the corporate model of medical care. [The book] outlines a process to reverse the direction of this impending disaster.”
’59 | Douglas L. Wilson G’59 Gr’64, co-director of the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., in April was awarded the Lincoln Prize for his book, Lincoln’s Sword: The Presidency and the Power of Words, which was published in November. His earlier book, Honor’s Voice: The Transformation of Abraham Lincoln, won the prize in 1999.

’60 | Lois Kushner Cohen CW’60 retired last June from federal service after a career of 42 years. Her last position was as associate director for international health at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in Bethesda, Md., where she was also director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Dental and Craniofacial Research. She currently serves as a consultant to the institute and to the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, and was recently appointed as a Paul Rogers Ambassador for Global Health Research. A symposium in tribute to her career was held last December at the National Institutes of Health. That month she was also inducted into “the Court of Honor as a Distinguished Daughter of the Philadelphia High School for Girls.”
Mark K. Kessler L’60 is a partner in the corporate and securities practice group of WolfBlock, the Philadelphia law firm. In January he received the 2007 Dennis H. Replansky Award from the Philadelphia Bar’s business-law section. A former chair of the section and of the Bar’s committee on securities regulation, he currently serves on the ABA’s committee on regulation of securities. He is a member of the board of Arcadia University.
Bert Lazerow C’60, professor of law at the University of San Diego, has been re-elected chair of the university senate there for this academic year.

Peter M. Schantz C’61 V’65 in February received the 2006 James A. McCallam Award from the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States for his “exceptional contributions to veterinary public health.” A senior service fellow in the parasitic-diseases division of the National Center for Zoonotic, Vectorborne, and Enteric Diseases at the CDC in Atlanta, he is recognized internationally as an authority on zoonotic parasitic diseases. An adjunct professor of international health at Emory University, he had received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Penn School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. He is married to Mary Bartlett, a health-communications specialist in the same division at CDC. He has two daughters, a son, and two teenage stepsons, plus a dog and two cats.

Lawrence J. Beaser C’67, a partner with Blank Rome LLP, who also serves as counsel to the board of the Philadelphia Bar Association, in January was re-appointed to the board of The Philadelphia Foundation, having earlier served on it from 1995 to 2005.
Dr. Robert H. Cox GrE’67, a professor at the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research, at Lankenau Hospital near Philadelphia, received a three-year, $293,000 grant from the W. W. Smith Charitable Trust for his research project on how specific interactions of mutated proteins contribute to high blood pressure. He joined the staff there in 2000 after serving as a professor of physiology at Penn.

Paul C. Williams W’67, Chicago, is a managing director for Nuveen Investments, Inc., which provides managed assets and structured investment products to financial advisers. He also serves as a trustee of the University and president of Penn Alumni. In February he received the CASE Robert L. Payton Award for Voluntary Service from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, its highest award for volunteers in higher education who “demonstrate leadership in advancement programs, furtherance of the philanthropic tradition, and public articulation of needs, goals, and issues in education.” It was only after re-engaging with Penn as a part of planning his 25th Reunion in 1992, that he began to be involved as a volunteer and donor, becoming a member of the Board of Overseers for the School of Arts and Sciences in 1994 and a member of the Trustees of the University, as an alumni trustee representing the Midwest region, in 2000; he accepted the position of president of Penn Alumni in 2003.

’79 | John J. Daniszewski W’79 was appointed international editor of the Associated Press last May, coming back to the United States after 18 years as a foreign correspondent. He now supervises more than 500 journalists and editors worldwide. He started his journalistic career reporting for the Philadelphia bureau while a student at Penn. He returned to the AP after 10 years as a foreign correspondent for The Los Angeles Times, based in Cairo, Moscow, Baghdad, and London. Previously he had worked for the AP from Philadelphia, New York, Poland, and South Africa. John is married to Drusilla Menaker C’78, who is a senior media advisor for IREX, a non-profit international-development organization that supports the strengthening of media sectors in countries emerging from conflict or undergoing transition. They have two children, Anna (13) and Ben (15), and live in Nyack, N.Y.

Dr. Jack Sariego C’79 is associate professor of surgery at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. After 10 years in Mississippi, and two tours of duty with Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, he and his family have returned to his hometown, where he now practices as a general surgeon and surgical oncologist. He had been chief of surgery at Ocean Springs Hospital, which was directly hit by Hurricane Katrina; he headed the medical relief and recovery effort in the town during and after that catastrophe.

’80 | Leonard Bernstein C’80 W’80 is a partner in the Philadelphia office of Reed Smith LLP who chairs its financial-services regulatory group. He was recently appointed to the executive committee of the Support Center for Child Advocates in Philadelphia, which provides free legal and social services to the city’s abused and neglected children. He was also recently named to the executive committee of the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce in Philadelphia.
Steve Mendelsohn W’80 < [email protected]> became executive director of Project Rebirth in 2005; it is “a non-profit documentary film organization that is making the only time-lapse movie of the complete rebirth of Ground Zero.” Since 2002 the project “has been filming everything that takes place at the World Trade Center site and will continue to do so until the buildings are all completed.” They are also filming “the lives of 10 people who were seriously affected by the events of 9/11, as they rebuild their lives over 10 years. The film will be in the Memorial Museum at Ground Zero (opening in 2010) and will also be released globally as a feature-length documentary. The project budget is $13 million and [we] have raised $9 million so far.”

He is also a technical editor for the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, the official journal for the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Inc. He was an invited lecturer at the international conference Advances in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery: The Cutting Edge, last November; he spoke on innovations in body-contour procedures including circumferential abdominoplasty after massive weight loss, vertical breast reductions, and breast augmentation in combination with tummy tucks. ’88 | Marc Falkoff C’88 is an assistant professor of law at Northern Illinois University, where he teaches criminal law, criminal procedure, and habeas corpus. For the past three years he has represented 17 Yemenis being detained as “enemy combatants” by the U.S. military at Guantanamo Bay. He recently edited a collection of detainee poetry called Poems from Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak, which will be published by the University of Iowa Press in August.

’90 | Ronald Chillemi C’90 has served since 2002 as an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, where he prosecutes white-collar fraud. In October he received the U.S. Department of Justice’s Director’s Award for Superior Performance for his work as lead prosecutor in U.S. v. Kenneth Jenkins et al. (successful convictions followed a three-year investigation of a violent crack-cocaine ring in four states that laundered money by mortgage fraud). He lives in the Philadelphia area with his wife, Barbara, and their son.

They met during his post-doctoral fellowship on Parkinson’s Disease at Children’s Hospital, introduced at a celebration at their synagogue on 18th and Spruce streets. The wedding guest list included classmates from all her studies at Penn, as well as her career at the undergraduate-admissions offices in the Graduate School of Education and the Wharton School. Her doctorate was on quasi-affiliated academic institutions and their roles on the college campus, through the lens of Hillel at Penn. Chris Gomez C’91 W’91 has taken a new role within Hewlett-Packard, as the vice president of finance for the imaging and printing group, supporting the Europe, Middle East, and Africa regional sales team. He had earlier served as vice president of finance for the inkjet systems global business unit. Chris is in the process of relocating his family from San Diego, Calif., to Stuttgart, Germany. He has been with the company for almost 10 years, first joining Compaq in 1997, and then formally joining HP when they merged in 2002.

His second book, Preventive War and American Democracy, was published by Routledge Press in February; it “examines how American leaders and citizens faced the preventive-war temptation from the end of World War II through the Iraq war of 2003, and explores the implications of this history for American foreign policy.”

David Lerner W’02 and Tracy Bloom C’03 are delighted to announce their engagement, which took place just before Thanksgiving weekend. They live in New York, where he is an associate on the derivatives-sales desk at Goldman Sachs and she is assistant manager for library marketing at Random House Children’s Books, while pursuing her master’s in library science at Pratt Institute. They will marry this November, in Great Neck, N.Y., and are looking forward to celebrating this exciting year with many of their Penn friends.

Erika Johnson GCP’03, Boston, a city planner with Daylor Consulting Group, Inc., in Braintree, has earned the designation of AICP, or certified planner, from the American Institute of Certified Planners. Most recently she assisted with the Article-80 permitting for the Griggs Street residential development in Allston, and managed the Route 146 Corridor study for the towns of Douglas, Northbridge, Sutton, and Uxbridge. And she has volunteered teaching planning to students at the Rogers Middle School in Hyde Park.
Rachel King C’03 married Jonathan Gerstein C’01 on Aug. 6 in her hometown of Bethesda, Md. They started dating at Penn and got engaged in Dec. 2005. “The ceremony took place at Congregation Beth El and a reception followed at Strathmore Music Center in Rockville, Md. It was a beautiful wedding and included many alumni.” In the wedding party were Leigh Wasserstrom C’03, Todd Wise C’01, and Richard Lapidos W’02.
