’34 | CELEBRATE YOUR REUNION: MAY 16-19, 2008
John M. Sprecher W’34 writes, “I am one of the fortunate ones of the Class of 1934 to still be alive at 95 years old. I have an apartment in Ephrata Manor and my wife, Sally, is here in the nursing section. I treasure the memories of those days at Penn. 1930-34 was the depth of the Depression, and we saw men on the street corners selling apples at 10 cents. I was in a lecture class the morning Roosevelt closed the banks and heard Dr. Huebner advise anyone with money to invest in blue chips in the stock market. He was right, but I had no money. I and many other students would have gone hungry but Phil Bauer, the little restaurant on 37th Street, fed us on credit. Tuition was $220 a semester. It was a great privilege, as a Penn Band member, to play under the direction of John Philip Sousa when he directed us at a concert in 1932. We played at all football games, including one at Notre Dame that we went to by overnight train. It was a wonderful experience. My Penn education has helped me during my lifetime. I owned and operated the family hardware store until 1980, when I turned it over to my son. I was president of the local school board and chair of the local municipal authority. Sally and I have traveled in all 50 states, Europe, Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico. My computer is a great help by keeping me up with the rest of the world, and enabling me to communicate with all my friends at [email protected]. I wish I would have had it in 1930.”
1940s
’49 | Robert G. Ives C’49 writes that he is well into his third career. His first was with WCAU TV in Philadelphia, where from 1951-53 he wrote and promoted The Ghost Rider, a movie participation show for kids, complete with secret decoders, prizes, awards, outdoors appearances, etc. In 1973, following several years with The Saturday Evening Post and with Life magazine, he started Railroads Under Glass, the company where, for the next 30 years, he created one-of-a-kind, glass-topped coffee tables, featuring model railroads traveling through custom-designed landscapes [see, “Everybody Has a Railroad Gene” Penn Arts & Sciences(spring 1996)]. Then, in 2003, he published his first full-length book, R. G. Ives Short Stories. His second volume, Keys in the Sand, was recently published; both are collections dealing with the American experience from the time of the Great Depression to the turn of the 21st century. Bob says he won’t be seeking a fourth career: He’s “seen enough to keep this one on track ’til the ink runs dry.” His books are published by Infinity Publishing in West Conshohocken, Pa.
Lester D. Shubin C’49 writes that he was “honored at a luncheon given by the U.S. Department of Justice for ‘pioneering work in developing Kevlar into soft body armor. The occasion was the documented save of the 300th police officer; attending were the first save and the 300th. A presentation was made by the deputy attorney general.”
1950s
’50 | Dr. Milton R. Okun C’50 writes, “I have had a career in dermatology and dermatopathology, both research and clinical aspects. This included senior authorship of a textbook in dermatopathology, directorship of the Dermatopathology Foundation and the Boston Dermatopathology Laboratory, clinical professorships at Boston University School of Medicine, and directorship of research supported by a NIH extramural grant. I have done basic research in the enzymology of melanogenesis, as well as cellular differentiation and morphogenesis, with numerous publications in the scientific literature. Since Dec. 2006, I have been working on a special aspect of differentiation and morphogenesis (submitted for publication); this is based on a review of the theory of asymmetrical mitosis, widely believed to be the basis of differentiation. This theory holds that the first two daughter cells of a fertilized egg have basic differences and generate different organs. I have shown that this theory cannot be valid, since these daughter cells, when separated, generate identical (monozygotic) twins. I have also proposed that these daughter cells, when not separated, generate identical right and left halves of the body of individual organisms with bilateral symmetry, including humans, so we are all quasi-identical twins.”
’51 | Amaranth Roslyn Ehrenhalt FA’51 sends “Greetings from Paris!” She had a two-month, solo show of her recent work (paintings, sculpture, prints, mosaics, watercolors) at the Maison des Arts in Bagneux (two miles south of Paris), late last year. Arnold Zeitlin C’53, [email protected], has returned to China, for his sixth year of teaching in the English-language undergraduate journalism program at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies; he also consults with Chinese news media and other university journalism programs, including Hong Kong University. He is a former AP correspondent and bureau chief in West Africa, Pakistan, and the Philippines and, based in Hong Kong, was a vice president with UPI for the Asia-Pacific region. He is happy to announce the birth in Manhattan on Aug. 8 of his “fifth grandchild, Ariel Aderemi Zeitlin, the second son of my son, Jide Zeitlin, and his wife, Tina Goldberg. Jide, who is chair of Amherst College, retired as a Goldman Sachs partner in 2005, and then formed a company that builds mobile-telephone towers in India; Tina is a vice president for accessories for designer Marc Jacobs. As for the rest of the family, daughter Veronica is in the State Department, overseeing West and Central Africa in the office dealing with human trafficking. Daughter Jenny is a director of research at the Institute for Health and Medical Research in Paris, as well as accompanying her family to Warsaw, where her husband, Stéphane, is the cooperation and cultural counselor in the French embassy. Daughter Sze-kei is with FannieMae in Washington.”
’54 | Lee Ducat Ed’54 in October received a Distinguished Daughters of Pennsylvania Award, which is “presented to selected women of Pennsylvania, identified as bringing honor, character, and prosperity to the Commonwealth through their outstanding voluntary and professional contributions.” She is known for promoting research into diabetes for over 37 years. In 1970 she set up the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in Philadelphia, the National Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in 1972, and the International Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in 1975. And she is founding president of the National Disease Research Interchange, which rescues donated human tissues that would have been discarded and sends them to leading research laboratories across the country. She also founded the Human Biological Data Interchange, which utilizes family research to explore the genetic base of diseases.
Dr. Eugene N. Myers W’54 is the Distinguished Professor and Emeritus Chair of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He writes, “I participated in the 12th ASEAN ORL Head and Neck Congress in Ho Chi Minh City on Aug. 20-25. I gave a plenary lecture, ‘Organ Preservation by Surgery in Cancer of the Larynx,’ and presented the lectures ‘Newer Diagnostic and Therapeutic and Management Cancer of the Larynx’ and ‘Selective Neck Dissection: Contrast and Techniques.’ I also had the honor of chairing the symposium session of head and neck surgery.”
’56 | Dr. Myron A. Lieberman D’56 was recently honored with a lifetime-achievement award by the Israel Orthodontic Society. He had established that country’s first post-graduate orthodontic program in 1971 and served as department chair of orthodontics at Tel Aviv University for 25 years; he continues to teach on a voluntary basis.
Judi Oser CW’56 writes, “I was the featured artist, a show of about 20 paintings, at the Gallery Concord, in Concord, Calif., for July, August, and September. I am also an honorary life-signature member of the Philadelphia Water Color Society, and a signature member of the California Watercolor Association. I had a show at the Giorgi Gallery, in Berkeley, last half of October. I have retired from my day job—every artist needs one: I graduated from law school in 1980.”

Cecil Eby Gr’58 is a retired professor of English at the University of Michigan. He writes to “announce publication of my controversial book about the Americans who fought in the Spanish Civil War, Comrades and Commissars: The Lincoln Battalion in the Spanish Civil War, which was published last year by Penn State Press.”
Joel P. Kay W’58 recently received the Banco Rotto Legend Award at the Texas Bankruptcy Bench-Bar Conference. He received it with the other named partners of the former firm of Sheinfeld, Maley & Kay, P.C. In the citation it was noted “that the firm demonstrated to bankruptcy professionals around the country that Texas could effectively handle even the most complex reorganization cases.”
1960s
’63 | Eugene H. Fleishman W’63 recently received the fourth annual Michael H. Urbach Community Builder Award from the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, which is “given in recognition of achievement as a CPA in charitable-board leadership.”
Dr. Benjamin H. Natelson C’63 M’67 writes, “I am an academic neurologist who moved from doing basic research to clinical research in 1991 to study medically unexplained illnesses, including fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. John Wiley & Sons has just released my new book, Your Symptoms Are Real: What to do when your doctor says nothing is wrong, written for the general lay audience. My day is filled with research, clinical work, teaching med students, and working on a fourth book. My evenings are filled with family visits, theater, and ballet with my wife, Dr. Gudrun Lange, an academic neuropsychologist.”

Greenberg C’65 L’68 writes that, after 35 years in the office, he has retired as the Miami-Dade County Attorney; he had earlier spent 25 years as the first assistant county attorney there. He continues as an adjunct professor of law at the law schools of the University of Miami and the Florida International and St. Thomas universities. At the law firm of Wetherington, Klein & Hubbart, he is affiliated with a former chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court, a former chief judge of the Third District Court of Appeals, and a former chief judge of the Miami-Dade County Circuit Court. The firm engages primarily in mediation and trial and appellate consulting. He is married to Phyllis Kirschner Greenberg CW’67: their sons are Ben Greenberg C’93 and Jerry Greenberg C’96 G’96.
Dr. Robert Lee Pyle V’65 GV’67, Blacksburg, Va., professor of cardiology in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Science at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, in August was appointed professor emeritus there.
’66 | Dr. Lawrence F. Van Horn G’66 in April was awarded the Omer C. Stewart Memorial Award by the High Plains Society for Applied Anthropology for “exemplary achievement,” notably his current editorship of the journal The Applied Anthropologist, and work and ethnographic reports over the years as a U. S. National Park Service anthropologist.
’67 | Lenore H. Forsted CW’67, Wynnewood, Pa., writes that she was chosen as “Citizen of the Year” by the Pennsylvania Citizens for Better Libraries for her work as president of the Lower Merion Library System and as initiator of the “One Book One Lower Merion” community reading program. “One Book has involved hundreds of residents in panel discussions, author presentations, arts and crafts, book reviews, and films related to the books chosen for each of the three years of the program.”
Clay Hamlin W’67 WG’72, Haverford, Pa., in October was inducted to the Athletic Hall of Fame of the Nichols School in Buffalo, N.Y., from which he graduated in 1963.
Michael A. Lebow EE’67 GEE’76 writes, “Since retiring from Consolidated Edison Company of New York in 2000, I have been busy consulting to various utilities around the country. However, I was pleased to take time out to help my younger son, Alexander H. Lebow C’11, move into Ware College House in the Quad. My brother-in-law, Dr. David R. Gershon Bacon C’68 wrote in early November that “this fall semester I am on sabbatical leave and am serving as the Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Visiting Professor of Judaic Studies at Yale University, where I am teaching in the religious-studies and history departments. Since 1981 I have been a member of the Jewish-history department at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat-Gan, Israel. My wife, Brenda, and I, our four children, and three grandchildren make our homes in Jerusalem.”
Janet Berenson CW’68 G’70, [email protected], lives and works in London as a community educational-development consultant for the Leo Baeck College. She wrote Kabbalah Decoder and a number of educational publications, and lectures on Kabbalah and Jewish meditation in Britain, Europe, and the U.S. She has two daughters: Rachel graduated this summer with a first from the Royal Holloway University of London and Deborah is studying drama at the University of East Anglia in Norwich.

McKeever C’69 L’72 is a partner in the Philadelphia office of DLA Piper, the international law firm, where he specializes in complex commercial litigation and regulatory and administrative law. In September he was elected to the board of the Committee of Seventy, the city’s non-partisan political watchdog.
Craig Weatherly C’69 and Peg Streep CW’69 married in Dec. 2005—some 36 years after they first dated at Penn in 1969! They live in Burlington, Vt., where he is a partner at Gravel & Shea, a full-service law firm, and she continues to write non-fiction books.
Dr. Andrew Zeitlin EE’69 is a senior principal engineer with the Mitre Corporation Center for Advanced Aviation System Development in McLean, Va. He received the Dr. John C. Ruth Digital Avionics Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics for his “seminal role in the definition and deployment of the extremely critical algorithms that are the cornerstone of the internationally deployed Aircraft Collision Avoidance System.” He is married to Elaine Glick Zeitlin CW’70, and their daughters are Dr. Samantha Zeitlin C’97 and Beth Shaw.

’70 | Dr. Peter M. Gotlieb C’70, associate dean for experiential learning and career services at Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City, N.J., received in November the Experiential Education Pioneer of the Year Award from the National Society for Experiential Education.
’71 | Stanley M. Berman WG’71 wrote in early October, “I retired from B’nai B’rith International, completing a 27-year career, where I was chief financial officer. To keep from being bored in retirement, I began a new career as chief financial officer of Global Impact, a charity based in Alexandria, Va., whose purpose is to raise money to support approximately 50 member charities that help those most in need overseas; last year, it raised over $140 million. Additionally, I am a member of the executive committee of the Greater Washington Society of CPAs. My wife, Linda, and I live in North Potomac, Md.”
Dayton Duncan C’71, Walpole, N.H., has been named to the board of the newly formed National Conservation System Foundation, which was created to protect and expand the 26 million acre network of national monuments and other public lands in the West. Also on the board of the Student Conservation Association, he is currently at work as writer and producer with his longtime colleague, Ken Burns, on a major documentary series for PBS on the history of the National Parks.
Bruce S. Katcher W’71 L’76, an attorney with Manko, Gold, Katcher & Fox, LLP, an environmental, energy, and land-use law firm in Bala Cynwyd, Pa., in October was included in The Best Lawyers in America 2008 for his contribution to environmental law.
’72 | Kay Cothran Craigie Gr’72 was a member of the U.S. delegation to the triennial conference of the International Amateur Radio Union held in Brasilia, Brazil, last September. She is first vice president of the American Radio Relay League, Inc., the national association for amateur radio.
Arthur N. Read C’72 is general counsel for Friends of Farmworkers, Inc., a legal services provider in Philadelphia. In November he received the 2007 Morris Dees Justice Award from the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and the University of Alabama School of Law. He was “recognized for nearly 30 years of tireless, courageous, and effective representation of farmworkers and immigrants.”
Lee Tabas C’72 ME’72 received the Bertrand W. Hayward Alumni Award for outstanding teaching from Philadelphia University. Executive in residence there, Lee teaches MBA students, in addition to running his own business of Tabasfunding, which provides funding to entrepreneurs to acquire or expand businesses. His daughter Elizabeth Tabas Carson C’01 was inducted into the New York bar in July. She is married to Todd Carson, lives in London, and works as a banking lawyer for Clifford Chance, in Canary Wharf. His son Samuel Bradford Tabas C’99married Clementine Randon-Tabas on Nov. 3.
Miles U. Theeman W’72 writes that he has been named president and CEO of Affiliated Healthcare Systems, Bangor, Maine, whose 13 operating divisions provide healthcare services to hospitals, healthcare providers, and businesses throughout New England. He lives in Bangor, with his wife of 34 years, Sharon Perrone Theeman Nu’72. They have two grown daughters.

Dibner C’73 writes that he and his son, Ned, founded the non-profit Kramden Institute in their basement in 2003; it “has grown to over 700 volunteers, its own headquarters, and three employees. It collects, refurbishes through its Geek-a-Thon process, and donates PCs to less-fortunate kids. The program should be taken nationally within the next year. www.kramden.org.” Mark and his wife, Elaine, live in Research Triangle Park, N.C., where he heads the biotechnology-consulting firm, BioAbility LLC, and they will soon celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
Dr. Donald Pittenger Gr’73, who retired from work as a government and consulting demographer in Sept. 2006, writes that he now shares writing duties with a couple of other ex-Ivy Leaguers on the popular arts and culture website 2blowhards.com. Occasionally he includes items regarding his experiences at a school whose name he “craftily disguises as ‘Dear Old Penn.’”

Dr. Louis M. Weiner C’73 in October was appointed director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University. Previously he was chair of medical oncology at Philadelphia’s Fox Chase Cancer Center and professor of medicine at Temple University. Specializing in gastrointestinal cancers, he also conducted research on innovative cancer therapies at Fox Chase.
’74 | Peter R. Pendergast C’74 has rejoined the Boston office of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C., as of counsel; he was there from 1981 to 1987. He had been general counsel for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, in charge of legal aspects of the Big Dig.
’75 | Prof. Reuven Amitai C’75 holds the Eliyahu Elath Chair for the History of the Muslim Peoples and is director of the Nehemia Levtzion Center for Islamic Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He wrote The Mongols in the Islamic Lands: Studies in the History of the Ilkhanate, which was published last August by Ashgate Publisher (Aldershot, U.K.).

Pollak CW’75, who maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Wynnewood, Pa., has been elected president of the Pennsylvania Society for Clinical Social Work, which provides educational programs, legislative advocacy, and networking opportunities for social workers. Lee A. Rosengard L’76 is a partner in the Philadelphia office of the law firm of Stradley, Ronon, Stevens & Young, LLP and co-chair of its ADR-practice group. He was recently appointed general counsel there, a new position created to advise the management committee.
’77 | Dr. Scott H. Greenstein C’77 writes, “After 20 years of practice in Connecticut and, most recently, as chief of ophthalmology at both Waterbury Hospital and Griffin Hospital, Barbara and I have moved to Boston, where I am on the full-time staff of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and an instructor in ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. Our twin sons, Jesse and Max, are freshmen at Tulane and the University of Wisconsin at Madison, respectively.”

Vanessa Northington Gamble M’78 G’84 Gr’87 has been appointed the University Professor of Medical Humanities at the George Washington University. An historian, she specializes in the role of race and racism in American medicine and public health. Previously she had been director of the National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University in Alabama. A health commentator for NPR, she served as an associate professor of health policy and management at the Johns Hopkins University since 2002.
Nicholas J. Jouriles C’78, professor of emergency medicine at Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine, is an attending physician in the ER department at Akron General Medical Center and a member of the core faculty for its emergency-medicine residency program. He recently became president-elect of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
’79 | Gavin H. Lam EE’79 is chief executive officer and president of Lynn Concepts Inc., in Industry, Calif., which he set up in 1991; it manufactures and markets ceramic dinnerware and stainless steel cookware. In October he was elected to the board of the International Housewares Association. He has been a director of the Wah Yan Alumni Association since 1992. He and his wife, Jackie, have two children and live in Diamond Bar.
Eugene L. Podsiadlo W’79 has been named to the international advisory board of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Monterey Institute, an affiliate of Middlebury College in Monterey, Calif. It “strives to combat the spread of WMDs by training the next generation of nonproliferation specialists and disseminating timely information and analysis.”
Kenneth Warren L’79 is a partner and chair of the environmental and land-use practice group of the Philadelphia law firm WolfBlock LLP. In September he was elected to the board of trustees of the Academy of Natural Sciences.
1980s
’80 | Richard J. Coyle W’80 is director of international corporate affairs for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. He and his wife, Denise, live in Cumberland, Maine, with their three children. Head of the Maine International Trade Center from 2000-06, he was awarded the German Federal Order of Merit last September for his support of trade development with Germany and for promoting German language and culture in Maine.
Leslie Esdaile-Banks W’80 wrote in September, “I’m sorry I cannot make Homecoming. I had a speaking engagement in Miami that I committed to last year. Currently I’m a full-time writer working on paranormal novels for St. Martin’s Press. Glenn Kirschbaum C’80 and his wife, Cindy, are thrilled to announce the birth of their first child, Benjamin, on Oct. 3. “Ben is a lifelong Red Sox fan who celebrated the team’s World Series victory just three weeks after his birth. He and his folks live in Los Angeles, where his Dad works in the television industry and his Mom is a professional artist.”

Sarah M. Maxwell WG’80 CGS’85 is an associate professor of marketing at Fordham University and co-director of the Fordham Pricing Center. She wrote The Price Is Wrong: Understanding What Makes a Price Seem Fair and the True Cost of Unfair Pricing, which was published by John Wiley in January.
Andrew Toy C’80 G’81 has been appointed director of the Dr. Walter P. Lomax Retail Resource Network at the Enterprise Center, a Philadelphia non-profit, entrepreneurial-support organization (that was founded by the Wharton Small Business Development Center in 1989). He currently serves as chair of the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation and of Free Schuylkill River Park. He and his wife, Pat, have two teenagers, Zoey and Owen, in 10th and 8th grade respectively.
Gregory V. Varallo C’80 in October was appointed a vice chair of the corporate department of the law firm of Richards, Layton & Finger in Wilmington, Del.
Bruce Vrana ChE’80 GCh’82 writes that he is (still) working for DuPont in Wilmington, Del., as he has for 27 years. His latest mission is to save the planet, by developing process designs for advanced biofuels, as he is working on both of DuPont’s major initiatives, biobutanol and cellulosic ethanol. He was promoted to senior consultant in 2006, but objects to the use of senior in his title, saying he’s “too young to be a senior anything, although the extra money sure comes in handy with son, Robert Vrana C’08 (and looking at law school) and daughter, Laura, in Yale’s class of 2011.” His wife, Jenny, recently started a new job as director of finance and operations at the Independence School in Newark.
’81 | Hon. Alice Beck Dubow C’81 L’84 last May won both the Democratic and Republican nominations for a seat on the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, and she was appointed to the court in June. She also won election in November. She is married to Rob Dubow C’81 WG’87, and their son is Benjamin Dubow C’10.
James H. Gilmore W’81 writes, “I have a new book out: Authenticity: What Consumers Really Want, which was published by the Harvard Business School Press in October. My co-author and I argue that ‘authenticity is the new quality’ for postmodern consumers, and that companies must now manage the customer perception of authenticity as a distinct business discipline. (While clearly a business book, those outside the business world may also find it of interest as we draw from existential philosophy, architectural criticism, and even relativistic physics to discern the new consumer sensibility.) Rick Halpern C’81 Gr’89 has completed his first year as principal of New College, University of Toronto. He is also the Bissell-Heyd Chair of American Studies and a professor of history. This was chiefly for her work as founder of Parents United for Public Education, a citywide parent collective; it led a call for fiscal accountability and transparency in the School District of Philadelphia, and succeeded in lobbying the city for more than $20 million annually in permanent funds to schools. She also serves on the board of Asian Americans United, and was a founder of the Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School, where she teaches martial arts. She and her husband, Bret Flaherty C’89, have three children and are Philadelphia public-school parents.

After a honeymoon in Moorea and Bora Bora, Eve and David returned to Philadelphia.
Alexis C. Morris C’05 and Ryan M. Hubbard are excited to announce their engagement. They met in middle school and dated throughout high school. After time apart in college, they serendipitously reunited, she moved back to the Chicago area, and he proposed. She is an assistant manuscript editor for the journal Radiology at the Radiological Society of North America in Oak Brook, Ill. He is currently a law student at the University of Illinois College of Law, and expects to graduate in May. They plan to marry this August in their hometown of Lake Forest.
