37 Walter B. Gallagher W’37 writes that E. Craig Sweeten W’37celebrated his 90th birthday on Jan. 10. He is the retired senior vice president for development at Penn. He was the undergraduate class president, and is the alumni class president. He is a member director and former president of the Penn Club of Sarasota and Manatee County, Fla. He is very active and enjoys good health.

Rosenau CW’44 <[email protected]> e-mails that with the publication of two books, The Story of David—A Retelling and The Story of Job—A Retelling, and the reissue of her cassette, The Story of Ruth—A Retelling, as a CD, she has been busy this year with book-signings. In March a Colorado theater gave a reading of Islands, the first play of a modern trilogy; though recently finished, it had been in her thoughts for over 20 years. Other book-signings are scheduled for this May at Barnes & Noble in Jenkintown, Pa.
48 Hon. Harold Berger EE’48 L’51 is a shareholder and managing principal of the Philadelphia law firm of Berger & Montague, P.C., and a former Philadelphia Common Please Court judge. Among his career achievements he has acted as liaison counsel in the Three Mile Island litigation, served on the national case-management committee in the Exxon Valdez oil-spill litigation; and he was elected to the International Academy of Astronautics in Paris in recognition of his work in aerospace law. Currently he serves Penn as chair of the Friends of the Biddle Law Library as on the board of overseers of the School of Engineering & Applied Science.

52 Joseph N. McGowan W’52 has received the Directors Recognition Award, the highest commendation conferred by the U.S. Secret Service on a civilian; it is only given “to those organizations or individuals that have a long-standing history of outstanding cooperation and superior support of the agency.” He was specifically cited for his “many contributions in support of the Secret Service mission and his selfless commitment to the ideals and principles of law enforcement.” He currently serves as director of federal law-enforcement programs for Johns Hopkins University.
53 Dr. Robert S. Maurer C’53, Edison, N.J., was elected in February to serve a three-year term on the board of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He recently completed 35 years on its alumni-association board, serving as president in 1980 and secretary for the past 15 years. A past-president of the New Jersey Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, he currently serves on the adjunct faculty of the New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine as an associate professor of family medicine.

55 Dr. Syde A. Taheri GM’55 (www.inventionsbytaheri.com) was honored in February by the International Symposium of Endovascular Treatment of Aortic Diseases for his co-invention of the Talent Thoracic Stent Graft, which is now being produced by MedTronic. First used in 1995 on a human in Australia with a life-threatening aortic aneurysm, the device is currently being tested in clinical trials in the U.S. before it becomes FDA-approved.
56 Chhaganbhai B. Bhakta C’56 retired in 1995 as a public-health microbiologist in the Los Angeles County Health Department. He writes, “Since then I have traveled, meeting people, and enjoying two granddaughters, Kushmita (six, born on the anniversary of my wedding, June 7, 1954), and Sanji, born in Feb. 2001. My wife, Sarojben, and I had a vacation in December and January with family members to Gujarat state in India. We visited Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace in Porbunder; met a high-school classmate in Dandi, where Gandhi fought for the Salt Act of 1930. I also met another high-school classmate, now an engineer, and a friend from when I was at the University of Baroda, 1950-52. After 55 or 53 years, I was happy to meet them. I still do some yogic exercise to keep healthy. I am a 75-year-old vegetarian, non-smoker, and non-alcoholic drinker.”
Jerold A. Glick W’56 reports that, while retired from fulltime employment, he is an adjunct professor at Philadelphia University, teaching two senior-level courses on investments and portfolio management, and money and banking. He also is the editor of Mustard & Pepper, the quarterly magazine of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club of America.
57 Joseph M. Boonin C’57 is a retired music librarian who was head of the Recorded Sound and Moving Image Circulating Collection of the New York Public Library. In March he was honored by the Music Library Association for his distinguished career as a publisher and music distributor, as well as a music librarian.

61 H. Robert Fiebach W’61 L’64, Philadelphia, chairs the appellate, professional-liability, and securities-litigation practices of the law firm of Cozen O’Connor. In April he spoke on “Litigating the Legal Malpractice Case” at courses sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Institute in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. In January he was a featured speaker for an American Conference Institute session on professional liability. And he was recently selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2005-2006.
Henry A. Gladstone C’61 L’64, Merion, Pa., practices in the Philadelphia office of the law firm of Cozen O’Connor, and is a member of its corporate department. Last year he was named to Philadelphiamagazine’s list of Pennsylvania Super Lawyers, and recently he was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2005-2006.

In January he received an award from the Ivy Football Association, recognizing varsity football players who went on to distinguished careers. In his acceptance speech he noted, “We all grow up, but we carry with us the lessons of our youth. I try not to miss a Homecoming Game at Penn, and I root for the Quakers as hard as ever. And then Fran and I say goodbye to our friends and go home, and maybe I’m a little more aggressive and competitive for a day or two. Because after all, it rubs off on you.”

Dr. Carol Kasser CW’69 <[email protected]> wrote Manna for the Soul: Thoughts on Religion and Spirituality, which “encourages spiritual exploration from a liberal Jewish perspective,” and co-author of Stories We Brought With Us, an ESL reading textbook of world folk tales from around the world. In 2004 she published Just for Fun: Children’s Poems and Stories and Cast Me Not Off When I am Old, a guide for caretakers of the frail elderly. Her latest book, Reflections: Readings of Spirituality, Gratitude, and Love, contains inspirational readings; a cancer survivor herself, she will donate a tenth of its royalties to cancer research.
Judith W. McCue CW’69, a partner in the private-client department of the Chicago-based law firm of McDermott, Will & Emery, in March was named president of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel; she is a past chair of the its state-laws and elder-law committees. She is a member of the joint editorial board for uniform trust and estate acts of the National College of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws.
Lorraine Schechter GFA’69 (www.lorraineschechter.com) is an arts-education coordinator for the Santa Fe (N.M.) Arts Commission. She directs its ArtWorks program, which provides workshops in multiple arts for public schoolchildren. In late March she had a retrospective, Paperworks: 1991-2005, “of works on and in paper,” at a gallery there.

70 Emily Lloyd GCP’70, New York, in February was appointed commissioner of the city’s Department of Environmental Protection. She is a former executive vice president for government and community affairs at Columbia University. She is married to William H. Goldstein W’68 GCP’72, president and CEO of the School Construction Authority, and they have lived in Park Slope, Brooklyn, for more than 20 years. They have two children, Jonathan (24), who lives in Japan, and Julia (22), who lives in Connecticut.
Ellen Tarlow Weidner CW’70 writes, “I was published in the winter issue of SpeciaLiving magazine. I think this is an acccomplishment for a hemiplegic woman in a wheelchair.” A self-proclained biking maniac, she bought a recumbent stationary bike in 1999 and has clocked up 50,000 miles since.

73 Ira Belsky C’73, Franklin Lakes, N.J., a retired attorney and business executive, traveled to southeastern India to assist in tsunami disaster-relief efforts in January. Working with IMGE Emergency Relief Fund, established by Andy Krieger C’78 G’81 WG’84, and the local Hope Foundation, Ira worked primarily in the subsistence fishing village of Pudupattinam, about 50 miles south of Chennai (Madras). After learning from village children that the tsunami also washed away all of their school books, supplies, and uniforms, he arranged for replacement supplies and returned home to organize fundraising efforts to pay for them.

Donna Raub CGS’73 writes that she recently became director of major gifts at Santa Clara University in California. Her husband, Don Raub C’71 GEd’75, continues his law practice with Brooks & Raub in Palo Alto. Of their children, Emily is a Ph.D. student in English literature at Rutgers, Chloe is a sophomore at Tulane, and Austin is a high-school freshman (and aspiring basketball player). Skip Walker C’71 joined them in January for the Penn men’s basketball game against University of San Francisco.

Chettle Jr. Chair in Dispute Resolution and Civil Procedure at Georgetown University; she joined the Georgetown faculty in 1996 after teaching for 20 years at UCLA Law School. Emily Chalef Sanders CW’75 is president and CEO of Sanders Financial Management, Inc., a financial-advisory and investment-management firm based in Atlanta. She has a long commitment to helping women achieve financial security and independence: more than half of the company’s staff and clientele are women. In March she delivered a keynote address at an international financial-planning conference, “Money Matters for Women,” which was held in Paris by the Women’s Institute for Continuing Education and the American University of Paris.

Glen S. LeRoy GAr’76 GCP’76 GFA’76 in July becomes dean of the College of Architecture and Design at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Mich. He currently is a principal and owner of Gould Evans Goodman Associates, LC, based in Kansas City, Mo.; he joined it in 1990 and founded its urban design and planning, and landscape-architecture practices. From 1980 to 2002 he taught in the School of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Kansas, and led the Kansas City Urban Design Program from 1987 to 2002. He is also an adjunct professor and advisor to the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s program in architecture and urban planning.
77 Luther Jackson C’77 is executive officer of the San Jose Newspaper Guild-CWA, the union representing workers at the San Jose Mercury News and the Monterey County Herald. He was recently elected chair of the Interfaith Council on Religion, Race, Economic and Social Justice in San Jose. “Acting on the progressive moral values of love, compassion, and justice, the Interfaith Council has been a major force behind many Silicon Valley initiatives concerning the working poor, children’s health care, and affordable housing.” He is also active in the First Unitarian Church of San Jose.

Finizio L’82 in February joined the Philadelphia-based law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP as a partner in its Pittsburgh office; he specializes in construction-related and corporate-officers litigation. Before joining Pepper, he was a director of Houston Harbaugh, P.C., in Pittsburgh, and chair of its litigation-practice group. He is a member of the board of Achieva, which serves people with mental retardation, and is legal counsel to the Variety Club of Pittsburgh, a charity for children with disabilities.
Henry Mendenhall GEE’82, Shamong, N.J., a senior engineer in Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Technology Laboratories in Cherry Hill, has been named a Lockheed Martin Fellow, “in recognition of a 19-year career of exceptional technical achievement and leadership.”
83 Peter Reed G’83 Gr’89, New York, is a curator in the architecture department at the Museum of Modern Art, and an overseer of PennDesign. Cmdr. Evan Esaki EE’84 celebrated his change of command and retirement from the U.S. Navy Reserve after over 20 years of service. During the past three years he was thrilled to command a Reserve Naval Special Warfare unit based in Pearl City, Hawaii. He had operated attack submarines in the Pacific during much of his first 12 years of active duty; one highlight was a shore job as a cruise-missile targeting officer during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Evan is continuing his civilian career as an analyst in the Pearl Harbor area. With the “season finale” of his military career, he looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Judy, and sons James (four) and John (one). He still gets to wear a uniform, though, now that he’s volunteered to lead a local Cub Scouting group.

Robert Pollack C’84 writes, “I am blessed to announce the birth of twins, Rebecca and Jacob, on Jan. 9. My wife, Lola, and I have been married five years and these are our first children. I am in private practice in San Diego as a very busy plastic surgeon. We spend our spare time traveling and scuba diving.”

James M. Day Gr’87 <[email protected]> holds an endowed chair in the psychology of human development and psychology of religion at the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium. He founded and helps co-ordinate Spiritualite et Vie, a program that fosters inter-religious dialogue; it is the first inter-confessional, ecumenical program in campus ministry in the 579-year history of that university. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of New Hampshire; an associate of the Taos Institute; and an Anglican priest, with parish duties at St. Boniface in Antwerp, and the English Church in Oostende; and a consulting psychologist in the Centre de Neuropsychiatrie et Psychotherapie in Brussels. He is married to Birte Henkelmann-Day, a policy analyst and yoga teacher, and has three children, Julia Martina, Jonathan Morris, and Jacob Lucien. James would enjoy hearing from Penn friends and associates.
Keith Gottfried W’87, San Jose, Calif., married Cindy Goldwasser in April in the Netherlands Antilles. He had been senior vice president for corporate affairs at Borland Software Corporation, Scotts Valley, but left in April 2004 to pursue personal interests. Cindy is an attorney who had served as a case manager for the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center, a non-profit serving San Mateo County.

Pedro Ramos C’87 was appointed managing director of the City of Philadelphia in January. Then the city solicitor, he transitioned to the new position in early spring.
Dr. Franc Solina Gr’87 and his wife, Andreja, joyously announce the birth of their daughter, Ema Lora, on July 17. She was also welcomed by her sister, Natasa, who is 18. Franc is a professor of computer and information science at the University of Ljubljana and head of the Computer Vision Laboratory there, and Andreja is a lawyer at T. Knez, a real estate company. They live in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. They family enjoys sailing on their sailboat in the Adriatic sea in summer and skiing in the Alps during the winter; both destinations are just an hour’s drive from their home.

Kelly C’88 was recently appointed a chaplain to the Detroit Police Department; his responsibilities include the 1st (HQ) Precinct, and the court and mounted units. “I never thought those years of riding with the First City Troop would come in handy!” He continues to serve as the priest of St. John’s Episcopal Church there (www.stjohnsdetroit.org).
Harold Wolpert C’88 in July will join the Roundabout Theatre Company in New York as managing director. He has been general manager of the Manhattan Theatre Club since 2000. He serves on the board of the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers.

Jonathan Perkel C’89 married Lilibeth Amit Estilow on Nov. 26 in a civil ceremony in downtown Brooklyn; a celebratory lunch with his immediate family followed at the River Cafe there. He is vice president and associate general counsel of Travelocity, the online travel company, who also serves as general manager of its New York office. She is assistant wine director at Michael’s restaurant in midtown Manhattan. Erika Marshall C’91 writes, “I have been working as a prosecutor in New York since graduating from law school in 1995. I am married to a New York native, Ernest L. I wrote a paper, “Law, the Media, and Race: Perspectives From a Black Prosecutor,” and had the privilege of being a guest speaker at a seminar class offered through the Affams Department; the class was held in the DuBois College House, where I lived for three of my four years. Ira Hillman C’92, Class President, offers a quick personal update: “I continue to live in Washington, and work as managing director of Round House Theatre, a professional nonprofit theater with two performance facilities and an education center in Bethesda and Silver Spring, Md. (www.roundhousetheatre.org). The big news, however, is that on Aug. 28 I married Jeremy Barber at the Decatur House in Washington. Many Penn friends attended, but no toast was thrown. No highballs were consumed either. We decided to forego our honeymoon and volunteered to work in Santa Fe, N.M., for two weeks with the Kerry Campaign. Jennifer Nau Jorgensen EAS’92 writes, “I have been meaning to write since May 23, 1992, five days after graduation, to announce my marriage to Rob Jorgensen (who says Spring Break hook-ups don’t last?), and again after the births of each of my three children. So I am still a procrastinator, but better late than never. Some of the Penn Ten, as we have become known in some circles (okay, just ours) have also been delinquent in sharing their news, so I have taken it upon myself to share it for all of us. We have had mini-reunions at least once a year since graduation, initially for various weddings and bachelorette parties, but since those opportunities aren’t as frequent as they once were, we have resorted to trips to Napa, Vail, and of course The Shore to supplement our reasons to gather. Most recently (Oct. 30) we attended the wedding of Mydung Tran W’92 to Tony Nachman in Sedona, Ariz. It was the best-planned (Mydung actually scheduled in time for the wedding party to urinate on the day of the festivities) and fun-filled wedding I have ever attended. Mydung’s maid of honor was Meesh Josyln W’93 WG’98. All but Paige Daly DeBlasi W’92 were there—she was nine months pregnant at the time—but we had all made it to San Diego that May for the bachelorette party, where Mydung was the cutest and most obliging bachlorette in history. Mydung and Tony recently moved to Los Angeles, where she works as director of strategy and business development for Ticketmaster. Here is a brief update on the rest of us. Paige married Steve DeBlasi in 1998. They were in Boston until two years ago, then they moved to Manhattan, where they live with their new baby, Conner Jackson, who was born last November. He is already receiving private pitching lessons from his daddy and learning about the private-equity business from his mommy. Paige recently made partner in Apax Partners, a private-equity firm. Crissie Rice Ricketts W’92 married Eric Ricketts in 1996; they live in Vienna, Va., with their two sons, Owen (five) and Andy (three), and are in the process of adopting a baby girl from Guatemala. Crazy Mrs. Ricketts left the business world to teach calculus at her former high school, where she entertains the kids daily with math aerobics and stories of her youth. She is extremely happy using her education to help educate others. Erin Brophey Paschke C’92married her high-school sweetheart, Brett Paschke, in 1994; they now live in Lake Forest, Ill., with their three children, Will (five), Luke (three), and Lauren (one). Erin stays busy taking care of her children, recruiting for ROTC and West Point, and competing in triathlons. Sevrin Huff Praeger EAS’92 married J.D. Praeger in 2000; they live in Denver, with their son, Jaks (two). Sevrin continues to work for Level 3 Communications. Liz Witt C’93 lives in New York, where she still parties like a rock star, makes jokes about the baby factories the rest of us have become, and allows us to live vicariously through her. Liz has been working for Morgan Stanley since graduation, proving that some people really do have an ability to commit to long-term relationships. Chrysten Cunningham C’92 married Scott Sandell in 1999; they now live in San Diego, with their two daughters, Emma (three) and Clare, who was born on Sept. 3. In addition to being her friends’ free and over-worked obstetric consultant, she has a private ob-gyn practice. I can honestly say, she is the best doctor I know, and I know hundreds, so if you are pregnant or incontinent, give her a call. Amy Monaghan Allen C’91married Kevin Allen in 1998. They live in Arlington, Va., with their three children, Grace (five), Matthew (three), Kate (two) and, I’m not kidding, number four is due in July. Go Kevin, go Kevin. Amy obviously works harder than the rest of us 24 hours a day but also finds time to work part-time outside the home. Nancy Shackleton Green W’92 married Todd Green in 1999 and they live in Newport Beach, Calif., with their two children, Asher (three) and Ella (one). Nancy enthusiastically retired from practicing law at the birth of her first child and is now a harried, but happy full-time mom. I live in Tacoma, Wash., with Rob and my three sons, Robey (five), Jack (three), and Charlie, who was born in August. I’m still an internist in the Army, which has been a blessing, because I was diagnosed with aplastic anemia about a year ago, and if I do say so myself, there is no better medical care than that provided by military physicians. It has been a scary year and I couldn’t have made it without seeing the smiling faces of my children every day and the support of Rob, my family, and the wonderful women I met at Penn 16 years ago.”

Dan Kryzanowski W’00 e-mails, “After four years of work and play in Manhattan, I packed my bags and moved to warm-and-sunny Phoenix, just as the first snowfall hit the East Coast. In New York I spent much of my time trading equity finance products for Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers. On the side, I volunteered for the Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation, devoted to promoting leadership development amongst high-school sophomores. In Phoenix (Glendale, Ariz., to be precise), I recently began my MBA at Thunderbird (Garvin School of International Management), the Number 1-rated international business school in the U.S. My focus is on international development and marketing. I plan to study in Guadalajara, Mexico, this summer and hope to secure an internship in Latin America with a private corporation or government agency for the fall season. Prior to this, she spent two years performing business strategy and analysis for the CFO of the investment-management division. She is also a volunteer anchorwoman for New Tang Dynasty Television’s Asia Brief, a non-profit news program that specializes in impartial and comprehensive Asia news.
