Dr. Richard B. Eisenberg C’38 M’42 GM’53, Erie, Pa., retired chief of pathology at St. Vincent Hospital (1949-1974); March 1. He later was clinical director of Regional Clinical Laboratories of Northwest Pennsylvania. A medical officer with the US Army’s 90th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II, he was in the Normandy Invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, and the liberation of Flossenbürg concentration camp. A president of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation, he lectured at several law schools, including Penn, and had been president of the University of Pennsylvania Law Alumni Society. Dr. Louise Proehl Shoemaker SW’47 GrS’65, Philadelphia, professor emerita of social work at Penn who had served as dean of what is now its School of Social Policy & Practice from 1973 to 1985; March 19. She joined the Penn faculty as an assistant professor in 1965, and retired an emeritus professor in 1994; she stepped down as dean in order to return to teaching. She started an on-campus daycare center, a faculty-staff assistance program, and a campaign which informed people of the availability of social, legal, and healthcare services. Dr. Shoemaker led the development of a new curriculum for the master’s of social work and helped establish a postdoctoral social-work research program. She had also been chair of the Faculty Senate and president of Penn’s American Association of University Professors.

Dr. Daniel G. Hoffman, Haverford, Pa., the Felix E. Schelling Professor Emeritus of English and the 22nd Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (appointed in 1973); March 30. He came to Penn in 1966, where he taught for 26 years, heading the Writing Program and teaching seminars on modern poets and American literature. In 1978 he was named poet-in-residence and director of the Writing Program. Dr. Hoffman retired as the Schelling Professor Emeritus in 1993, but continued to attend programs at Kelly Writers House. Among his books of poetry are An Armada of Thirty Whales (1954, which was chosen by W. H. Auden for the Yale Series of Younger Poets), Hang-Gliding from Helicon: New and Selected Poems, 1948-1988, (which received the Paterson Poetry Prize), Poe Poe Poe Poe Poe Poe Poe (1971), Brotherly Love (1981), an epic poem of the life of William Penn, Makes You Stop and Think: Sonnets (2005), The Whole Nine Yards: Longer Poems (2009), and Next to Last Words (2013). He won the Memorial Medal of the Magyar P.E.N. for his translations of contemporary Hungarian poetry, and also received the Hazlett Memorial Award and the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Arthur Rense Poetry Prize. His daughter is Kate Siddiqi C’79 SW’85.

Recently he became involved in research on urban forestry with the US Forest Service’s new Philadelphia urban field station. He served on Penn’s Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee, a cross-campus collaboration. Dr. Scatena received the School of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Award for Mentorship of Undergraduate Research in 2007.

Dr. Lawrence A. Shepp, Philadelphia, the Patrick T. Harker Professor of Statistics in the Wharton School; April 23. He joined the Penn faculty in 2010; previously, he was the Board of Governor’s Professor at Rutgers University, and he had earlier taught at Columbia and Stanford universities. In the early 1970s, he developed the Shepp-Logan algorithm that became the worldwide standard for tomography machines, and later expanded this for MRI scans, making them efficient diagnostic tools. He was awarded the IEEE Distinguished Scientist Award in 1979, and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1989 and the Institute of Medicine in 1992.
