Dr. Leon P. Weiss C’53, Merion, Pa., the Grace Lansing Lambert Professor Emeritus of Cell Biology in the School of Veterinary Medicine; Oct. 16. he chaired the department from 1976 to 1995, and he also held a secondary appointment in the Perelman School of Medicine. He specialized in the immunologic-hematopoietic systems of the spleen, thymus, and bone marrow; he also conducted research on malaria, work he continued after retiring. Dr. Weiss helped found two programs at Penn, the Center for the Interaction of Animals and Society and the Center for Aquatic Animal Medicine and Pathology. He held several editorial positions, including editor in the 1980s of Histology, a leading textbook; he provided many of his own pen-and-ink illustrations. He received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1984. Dr. Weiss was a long-serving member of the board of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass. He had served in the US Army. His daughters are Dr. Marisa C. Weiss C’79 M’84 (whose husband and daughter are Dr. David F. Friedman M’84 and Isabel R. Friedman C’13) and Dr. Alice S. Saul P. Steinberg W’59, New York, a prominent financier who was a former chair and CEO of Reliance Group Holdings; Dec. 7. He used the public offering of his first company (started soon after graduating and based on an idea he developed while a senior), to begin his career in investments and takeovers, leading to his 1968 takeover of Reliance Insurance. He used junk bonds and traditional financing to buy in a variety of industries; at one point he owned both Days Inn and the Grand Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat in the French Riviera. And he co-founded Telemundo, the Spanish-language television channel. An emeritus Trustee of the University (who was vice-chair of its development committee), he served for 15 years as chair of the Wharton School’s Board of Overseers. His allegiance to Wharton led him first to endow the deanship as the Reliance Professorship of Management and Private Enterprise and then to provide the lead gift to renovate and expand the School’s home into Steinberg Hall-Dietrich Hall. He co-chaired the Campaign for Penn, a major fundraising drive, 1989-91. His daughters are Laura Tisch Broumand C’84 and Holden G. Steinberg C’08, his sons are Jonathan L. A member of the Nursing School’s Board of Overseers, she held faculty appointments at several universities and won numerous awards, including the American Nurses Association’s Mary Mahoney Award.
Dr. Neil F. Leonard Jr., Philadelphia, professor emeritus of history; Oct. 13. He joined the old Department of American Civilization as an assistant professor in 1961, eventually chairing it. When that department closed in 1987, he was appointed a professor of history, and then appointed emeritus in 1996. His second book, Jazz: Myth and Religion, was published by Oxford University Press in 1987.
