Penn Alumni has nominated three candidates to fill three alumni trustee positions for five–year terms starting January 1, 2014.
Connie K. Duckworth WG’79 founded ARZU, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, in 2004 and serves pro bono as chair and chief executive officer. She is a retired partner and managing director of Goldman Sachs, where she was named the first woman sales and trading partner in the firm’s history during her 20-year career from 1981 to 2001. Ms. Duckworth is currently a trustee of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company and a director of the Russell Investment Group, and of Steelcase Inc. In her philanthropic work, Ms. Duckworth serves on the Board of Overseers for the Wharton School and the board of the Interfaith Youth Core in Chicago and NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, Ill., where she was the first woman to be named chair of the board. She is a member of the US-Afghan Women’s Council, a public-private partnership aligned with the US State Department, and past Chair of the Committee of 200, the organization of leading women entrepreneurs and corporate business executives in the US. She also co-authored a primer on entrepreneurship entitled The Old Girls Network: Insider Advice for Women Building Businesses in a Man’s World (Basic Books 2003). The recipient of numerous awards for leadership, advocacy, social impact, innovation, and global presence, Ms. Duckworth was honored as the 2012 Woman Extraordinaire by the Chicago International Women Associates. In 2011, she was awarded the Wharton School Dean’s Medal, its highest honor, and was named a 2008 Skoll Foundation honoree for Social Entrepreneurship. She holds an MBA from the Wharton School and a BA from the University of Texas.
James C. Johnson C’74 L’77 has served, since November 2010, as general counsel of Loop Capital Markets LLC, an investment banking firm in Chicago. Prior to that he served as vice president, corporate secretary, and assistant general counsel of the Boeing Company from 1998 until March 2009. Boeing is the world’s leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined. As a major service provider to NASA, Boeing operates the Space Shuttle and International Space Station. The company also provides numerous military and commercial airline-support services. Mr. Johnson holds his BA and JD from Penn. He has participated in the College Alumni Mentoring Series on campus; this program is structured to expose a small group of undergraduates in the College to an alumnus in a field that matches their interests. Johnson is also a proud supporter of Penn’s Margaret and James Johnson Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides financial support to undergraduate students in the College. He is also member of the board of directors of Ameren Corporation and Hanesbrands Inc.
Ramanan Raghavendran EAS’89 W’89 LPS’13 has made over 30 investments in the US, Canada, Western Europe, India, and the Philippines. He is currently the managing partner of Kubera Partners, a firm formed to manage cross-border private equity investments. Ramanan has focused on such investments for the last 12 years. Prior to founding Kubera, Ramanan was responsible for leading the cross-border investing efforts at TH Lee Putnam Ventures (THLPV), the growth capital affiliate of the Thomas H. Lee buyout firm. Ramanan co-founded and co-managed Impact Partners, the first venture philanthropy fund in India. Impact provided seed and expansion funds to nine non-profit organizations in India that today impact 1.5 million lives (primarily underprivileged children). He has served on several non-profit boards in India and the U.S. over the last 20 years. Ramanan serves on the Board of Overseers of the School of Arts and Sciences. Within SAS, he serves on the executive committee of Penn’s Center for the Advanced Study of India and on the governing council of CASI’s sister entity in India, the University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India. He also serves as the regional coordinator of alumni interviews in India on behalf of Penn Admissions, with a focus on diversity and outreach. He is the co-founder of the Penn Club of Mumbai. Ramanan earned his bachelor of science degree in computer science in the School of Engineering and Applied Science and his bachelor of science degree in finance from the Wharton School, both in 1989. He is currently enrolled in Penn’s Master of Liberal Arts program within the College of Liberal and Professional Studies.
