Having never traveled to the East, I thought this might be a good opportunity to experience a different culture and to learn firsthand about some of the history of China. But having never been here before and not being a speaker of the language, I was a bit hesitant to make a 10-month commitment, especially considering that I would only be one of two American teachers here. But the experience has been amazing. The students are friendly beyond belief, eager to learn, respectful, and helpful in every way possible. They are full of love, compassion, and understanding. They routinely pay for my meals, bring me gifts, tell me how appreciative they are that I’m here, and even call me during typhoons to make sure I’m okay. There are six students to each 12×15 ft. dorm room. They live with the same roommates for all four years, and I’ve yet to hear a complaint or even a voice raised from any of them. Their obvious contentment is a good testament to the adage, Less is more, and I hope that we, as Americans, can learn from their humble and appreciative way of living.”
